Posted: 15:31 - 10 Jan 2011 Post subject: an easy (and free) Broadband speed upgrade |
 |
|
I posted this info in another thread I thought its worthwhile people trying this so made a standalone.
I have seen a 600kbps difference (from 10 to 16mbs) in 5 minutes work.
Others on here have seen between 1 and 2 so it all depends really.
Its good to take a note of your SNR and ATT (signal noise ratio and attenuation) these are the 2 main factors into why people see such wild differences in broadband speeds in the same area.
these can be found on your router page, probably in advanced or statistics depending on the brand of your kit.
NOTE this may not work for IPstream (ADSL) connections is easier to see on ADSL2 as these are unbundled or running a profile instead of self training for best speeds.
SNR is the amount of tolerance a line (connection) has between the exchange and your router. A 24mbs line (set at the exchange) usually has an allowed amount of noise up to 6DB if the noise drops below this, the connection will eventually drop and you lose connection.
If you raise the noise (allowable) level to 9DB then you will get a slower connection speed but a more stable connection.
Attenuation is directly related to wiring type and distance from the exchange.
If you imagine attenuation as the physical force that the signal has to overcome to get to your router, the higher the ATT the worse your speed will be. Roughly speaking anything below 15ATT you should get around 15mbs+ 40+ is a bad thing and your looking at 1-4mbs.
When you make changes its good to let your router re-sync and recheck the SNR and ATT if the ATT goes DOWN and the SNR goes up your onto a winner.
BEFORE you do this, I am not the one doing it so take care and make a note of all changes you make to the wiring lol
There are mainly 2 types of socket in UK houses
An NTE5 socket
Denoted by it usually being white and has a faceplate that comes off half way down revealing the BT test socket.
A Pre NTE5 socket
Usually cream in colour, can have loads of wires coming out of it (star network) Pre digital phones.
If you have an NTE5 socket and want to see if your internal wiring is taking some speed away from your connection its simple.
1. Remove the screws from the bottom half of the frontplate on the master phone socket.
2. CAREFULLY pull the bottom plate away (note the wires will come with the plate
3. Move the plate or let it hang but don’t disconnect anything at this state
4. Plug your router into the phone socket BEHIND the plate you just removed
5. Reboot your router and look at the speed now
6. If you notice a difference then you can make this more permanent if not then see IF NOT below
7. Look a the face plate you removed, if you have the bell wire hooked in here it “should” be orange and white carefully remove it from the clip and wrap it up in suitable tape or trim it so there are no bare ends.
8. Plug the router back in and note the changes.
9. If the speed slows down again, make sure this is the master socket.
10. IF it is then look for a small plastic box somewhere in your house that has a T on it with the phone wire running in and out of it.
11. Open it and remove the orange and white wire.
12. Done!
If you have no orange and white wire in the socket then you can do this instead.
For broadband and voice to work you only actually need wires 2 and 5 (ports are numbered in the phone socket)
Remove all others BUT make a note of what you have removed, I would remove 1 at a time and make sure the phone still works.
IF NOT
Follow step 10 above to bypass the bell wire in your master socket.
If it’s a pre NTE5 socket follow the below
https://www.broadbandadvice.org.uk/Website/Internal%20Wiring/Ring%20wires/Removal%20for%20old%20fashioned%20Master%20Socket.htm

lol Keith yeah thats not good, BUT removing extension leads and the bell wire for a test is worth your time.
Using extensions on your line is a big nono the amount of noise they create makes a massive difference (n some cases not all)
For people that DO use them read this

I had massive problems 2 years ago, getting as low as 90kbps.
Tried the master socket.... it WAS the master socket and there was no others in the house .... so made no difference.
Eventually got an engineer round to remove that bell wire thing... went from 90-130 kbps to 5 meg..

Well. You got me to experiment.
My computer is halfway between two phone sockets.
The connection is consistantly a full 2-3 times faster in the extension socket compared to the master socket (5.5-5.7 in the extension, 1.83-2.56 in the master).
This makes no sense at all but I'm sticking with the extension socket and cutting nothing on the basis of that evidence.
I'm pretty sure my router will log the connection speed over a period of time. I may have a fiddle at some point to see if this is consistantly reproduceable over a longer period. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. If you are able I would move the router to where the phone socket comes in (your NTE5). remove the faceplace and plug the router into the BT socket behind that back plate and test your connection (note your SNR and ATT as well).
You dont mention if you are LLU or IPstream? If you are ipstream then you will need to give it some time to stabilise the connection, if you are LLU you should see an instant reaction if its going to do anything.
As you are using an extenstion to the router and then you feed your third area I dont see it making a difference removing the coach house line.
when you take the NTE faceplate off it will power down all extensions. If you find an improvement then put the face plate back on and restest if it drops then yes remove the extension and again retest. I use cordless phones so extension are not needed here and I have a 5 bedroom.
Is it not possible to keep the router at the master?
If not then homeplugs are an option I use 6 in our house (different brands) and they work great comapred to WIFI just make sure they are homeplug compliant so they will all work together 200mbs is good for 1080 content throughput.
Good luck

We have two cordless phones so there's no issue with flaky extensions. I have zero issues with the broadband anyway, I'm getting a good 1.4Mb (megabytes) most of the time. Just wondered if removing the coach-house end would improve it more betterer. ____________________ "There's the horizon! Ride hard, ride fast and cut down all who stand in your way!" |
