Just a quick question you guys might be able to help me with:

Can i use a 12v ignition coil on my 6v honda? Will this convert it to 12v or will it just not work, I personally dont see why it wouldnt work but im not an expert on this so...

Also im assuming i dont have to use model specific ignition coils? I ask this as I dont know the year of the bike, I have frame number but no v5.

Thanks all Smile

No.

It'll fry it. 6v Coil should be used on a 6v bike.

I've got a 12v CG coil if you want one, you'll need to solder a wire to earth it, as the one that was on snapped off, but it's yours for Postage if you want it Thumbs Up

Ahhh sorry, read this wrong. thought you were asking if a 12v coil can be used on a 12v bike.

Go look in a breaker's yard, shouldn't be too hard to find an old 6v CG to steal the coil off.

As mentioned before, a 6v volt coil exposed to 12v will die rapidly

Dont bother with 2nd hand coil, get on ebay and look for a brand new generic cdi coil off espaz - probably cheaper than a used one from a breaker

lol must be the only one then

It actally was Laughing might have been a replacement engine though.

Although the CG was changed from 6v to 12v in 1985, and they were changed from points to CDI in 1998 (in the UK, anyway).

i guess that would indicate that the cg that i am in posetion of is older than 85 then wouldnt it.
Is there a way i can get the engine started without having to have the whole bike together (the whole wiring loom and everything connected) as i dont have an ignition key or anything much, its pretty bare but id like to get the engine running if i can so i can identify any problems.

Hotwire it, in the proper way Wink

You'll need the basics to get it running:

Spark
Petrol
Air

Assuming you've got the airbox and carb on, you can use a temp petrol tank.

If you can get it sparking, you're sorted.

I've got the old speedway bike, which is basically the engine, carb and pod filter, and a tank.

The wiring hooks to the CDI unit, and there is no ignition switches.

Post pics of how it sits just now?

The loom is not in fantastic condition, to be honest with you Id like to cut as much of the loom out as possible and just get it working with the minimum of wiring. I just need to get hold of battery ignition coil and switch then, funnily enough my old man has my mates 78 cg in his back garden, I might nick the parts off that. Is there a way I can search the frame number online to find out the year and what not.
I got it for £40 with no v5 or anything, it had been used as a field bike.
