Talking of the police.... just happened to turn radio 4 on and today's programme in the Book of the Week series is about the origins of the police force in Britain - some may find it interesting perhaps?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00x8hl2

""The Invention of Murder" explores the Victorian fascination with deadly violence by relating some of the century's most gripping and gruesome cases and the ways in which they were commercially exploited.

Despite rising crime figures - and increasingly crowded cities - the public were reluctant to accept the establishment of an organised police force. This episode examines the reasons for that unwillingness and offers a fascinating insight into the origins of modern policing."

Watched 5 minutes and pretty much sums up why Jimmy Carr is an unfunny pointless human being, someone I would quite happily smash in the face and then teabag him, for being such a cunt.

Cue Hetzer.
Its interesting ..... having listened to 3 years of Hetzers foaming at the mouth rants.... that the fears and issues they talk of are exactly what he gripes about.

Quick summary of the first 5 minutes:

- Public reluctant to accept an organised police force.
- 'Police' in France were looked on as nothing but 'a nest of paid and corrupt govemental spies'.
- Concerns that it would destroy civil liberties
- Seen as expensive, tyranical and foreign.
- Public would rather 'be robbed by 'fate / fortune' than by the government'.

- Robert Peel (then home secretary) got the police in by using political influence and skill .. despite no clear evidence of a feared rise in crime.
In fact the stats were 'massaged' to show increase in crime.

- Middle classes accepted it .. But the working classes did not.
It took working class pastimes and turned them into criminal activites (sunday drinking and dog fighting etc.)

- Of the initial 2800 Police ... 2230 were dismissed at some point, most for drunkingness.
- Public very much against it all.
- The police 'abuse' of then has so many paralells with what we see today.
ie: deaths in custody ... people being killed in street for minor crime
.... goverment findings coming to conclusions that reject police criticisms and yet go against public opinion.

A good listen actually.
Blame the French Smile

Lets not forget the bit about the ancient public being keener to be robbed by a man in need, than employ at great expense via taxes men to enforce the law.

According to the prog there was the perception of an increase in crime and Robert Peel used this perception to promote his end (ie bring in a police force).

A politician using public perception to promote their own ends??? War, ID cards etc etc. Surely not?!

Some things never change ..... Evil or Very Mad Sad
