Just about to book my theory, just a quick question, are the hazard perception clips the same as for the car test?

Obviously the multiple choice questions will be similar but from a bike perspective but should i be using a different set of hazard perception clips from the ones i used for my car test?
Cheers.

The multi choice questions are different. From what I remember the hazard perception one are just generic and used for both car and bike.

Good luck Thumbs Up

Yeah with questions coming from a motorcyclist perspective instead of from a car drivers?

Just did a practice one on directgov site and will freshen up on my hazard perception (y)

Keep practicing. Theres a lot of questions that are common sense and you check the "safest" answer but there are a few that are designed to catch you out. It could be a choice of 2. Some are generic but quite a few are specific to motorcycle riding. You'll find the "lifesaver" questions come up.

Hazard clips are the same. There are only a very few motorcycle specific multiple choice questions, which you don't even have to get right if you get enough of the general questions right.

If your next question is "Then what's the bloody point of requiring a motorcycle theory test if you've already passed a car one, or vice versa?" then my answer would be: institutional stupidity or institutional corruption - it's really hard to tell the difference.

When I took my theory, I was quite shocked that hardly any of the questions in the practice tests were used - maybe 10% at the most, so my advice is to really really study as I found it a lot more difficult than my car theory! The common sense questions are a piece of piss but every now and then they'll throw a spanner in the works with a question on stopping distances in the wet or max speeds for motorised spaz chariots. I was one point away from failing Sad

So, although the practice sessions on the Directgov site give a good idea of what to expect (and the format of the test itself), don't rely on them for the questions your going to get.

Hip hip hooray. Now, get your test done sharpish - you don't want to go through that bollocks again, or get caught up in the 2013 license debacle.

The 3rd European Driving License Directive. Crib notes:

"A1" test and license at 17, only lets you take the L plates off your 125 and ride on motorways, doesn't let you ride anything bigger. Almost totally pointless, I can't see why anyone will bother.

"A2" test and license at 19, sat on a 400cc+ bike (in practice, a "500") , lets you ride anything up to 35kW (note that all modern "500"cc+ road bikes claim to generate more than 35kW Rolling Eyes). Unlike the current A2 test / A license route, the new A2 license will not automatically upgrade.

"A" test and license two years after passing A2, or direct access at 24 (up from 21!), sat on a 600cc+ (in practice, a "650" though) generating 40kW+. Then you get your Hayabusa.

So do your A2 test and get yourself an A license with a 2 year 25kW countdown while you still can.

why does the eu feel the need to meddle?
The two year restriction is stupid as it is..
Im planning on going from 3bhp to 33 and taking it steady, but then i'll have to wait 2 years before going over that.. :S

It should be drafted in UK law by the end of this month, and implemented before the end of January 2013.

At this point there's no wiggle room on the substance, just on our specific implementation of it. It's a complete clusterfrack, especially when you look at the exact power levels and engine capacities compared to real world bikes. Sorry, I'll try to not go off on another rant on it. Mad

Okay, so it's in law- but ATM, it is just sitting there?

So when will we stop being able to take A2 tests as we know it?

It's supposed to be January 2013 at the latest. We could bring it in earlier, but I don't see that happening.

No news on what happens to existing license holders, but I expect it'll all just carry over. Old A1 = new A1, old A with auto-expiring 25kW restriction = new A with auto-expiring 25kW restriction. There's no current equivalent of the new A2, so no carry over issues there.

The only question is what happens to people under 24 with an old A with 25kW restriction who want to remove the restriction: there's no suitable new test for them, since they can't (technically) do a new A test until they're 24, and a new A2 would be a downgrade. Given the relatively small numbers though, I expect the solution will be "tough, wait it out - be thankful you've got an A at all".

OK, I'll have a teeny rant. A new A2 license limits you to 35kW machines, so presumably a "provisional A2" does as well. But you have to sit your test on a machine of at least 400cc. Since "400" machine are really 396 or 398cc, in practice that 400cc really means a "500cc". The CB500, GPZ500 and ER-5 all (claim) to generate more than 35kW as standard.

So strictly speaking, you should sit your A2 test on a GS500 (post 1997) which is just under 35kW, or on a restricted 500, 600 or 650. For realsies. They chose a minimum engine size that is almost guaranteed to generate more than the maximum allowed power.

Think anyone is actually going to bother about this? I'd expect most A2 candidates to technically be riding illegally during their tests, with their training schools and the DSA either choosing to look the other way, or just being genuinely ignorant of the law.

And it'll be hilarious when the police have to deal with both old A <= 25kW and new A2 <= 35kW riders. Who knows how or if it's going to be enforced, and if it's not, then what's the point?

You know what really boils my piss? That the EU jizz-stains who came up with this actually revel in spoiling our fun. Read the tone of this memo to see what I mean. It's like they find bikers enjoying ourselves to be actually offensive to them, and they're gloating over catching us in the act. Mad
