Hi,
Im new, and just wanted to ask about the CBT.

I have had a car license for over 2 years now, and have done 2 CBT's, because the first one expired. Well, my current one is about to expire too, and i was wondering if i really need one? Im a fairly competant driver / rider, and ive only got my bike to go to town on, or as a backup if the car goes wrong.
It seems a bit of a waste of time, ive done 2 before. If i didnt do one, will it show up on the police data base? As far as im aware, the only thing you get out of it is a certificate.
Thanks

It won't show up on an ANPR camera, just as long as it's MOT'd, taxed, insured etc.

But you will basically be riding without a license.

Buggered if you get caught.

This.

Best thing to do is pass your bike test before the cbt runs out

As tedious as it is, don't take the risk of not renewing because as said above you'll be buggered if caught. Nothing wrong with just renewing the CBT if you've got no aspirations to get the full license and use the scoot as a runaround, and it's swings and roundabouts as to whether it's cheaper to do the full test;

Most people will need 3 - 4 days @ c. £130 per day.

For 3 days that's £390 + test fees of £90 practical + £31 Theory = £511.

I know of at least two schools in this area (South East) off the top of my head that'll do a CBT renewal for £70 if you still hold a current CBT, or it has expired within six months - have a ring around your local schools and ask.

But don't risk not renewing full stop - you don't want points buggering up your car license too.

That sounds fair enough. Im interested in biking, but tbh, i dont think im able to do a full bike test yet. Im wishing for a trike or bike+sidecar that i can drive on my car license, but theyre only dreams until i can save some money!
Il try ringing round locally, hopefully i can get abit knocked off!
Thanks

Also bear in mind that a CBT is a course that takes as long as it takes to complete - if you were able to do it mid week, at this time of year the chances are it'd be just you or you and one other student doing it - as you have prior experience, you should be done by lunchtime all things being equal.

Since the D196 doesn't show up on The Computer, the chances of Plod demanding to see it are absolutely minimal, unless you mow down some nuns. And even then, probably only if they were on their way to make a donation to the Police Benevolence Fund.

Hmmm, You know this is a bit like me, I have a Range-Rover for 'off-roading', but I'd really like a Panzheur. Its like a Six wheel tank kind of thing, only trouble is, I only have 7.5ton catagory on my licence, and its just that bit too heavy, I'd have to get an HGV... but that's klike really really expensive, and dafty hard to get... so since I only want it to go to the Pay & play once a month or so, do you reckon its worth it? I mean, if I just got one and used it on the road, do you think I'd get cought?
Jeez!
You are NOIT a qualified rider. CBT validates your provisional. It is a PRIVILIDGE to be able to ride a motorcycle on the road, without passing a driving test, at ALL. It is the ONLY motorcised vehicle you are allowed to use on the road, unsupervised without passing a test for it, DONT abuse it!
If you dont want to spend the money to re-do CBT, which daftly is probably more than what it would have cost to take the tests, had you got your butt into gear, becouse you dont use it that much, then... well, you dont really NEED it, do you, so stick to the car, and leave biking to propper bikers, or get with the program, and get a licence!

As mike said. Its a priviladge to be able to ride around without a full license. You cant do it in a car.

What no one has mentioned yet though is accident.

You go out and hit a car now, while your CBT is still in date, You swap details and let the insurance sort it out and all is well with the world.

In a few months your CBT runs out and you have the same smash you will be classed as riding without insurance or a valid license as the lack of CBT will invalidate one which cancels out the other. Theres a minimum of 3 points and a £60 on the spot fine before you even start.

Then you've got £150 for the privilage of the police towing away your bike and then storage in their facility until you can prove you're legal to ride the bike. And then you can add the hefty bill from the court case as the other driver takes you to court for damaging his car because your insurance wont pay out.

Is it worth it? Think of the CBT like condoms. Its better to have them and not need them than need them and not have them.

Hi again.
Thanks for all the great advice, i do not intend to ride without a license.
I rung up my local training school this morning, and asked if they do a refresher course, and explained ive done 2 CBT's before.

He said that beause i completed a CBT within 2 years of getting my full car license, i have moped entitability (sp?) for as long as i own the license, weather or not the CBT has expired?? Confused

Looking on the back of the certificate, it says
Quote:
This certificate also validates, for the life of the license, the full moped entitlement granted with a full car license issued in respect of a practical car test passed on or after 1 February 2001 if either:
car test is passed within 2 years of this certificate being issued, or
the training course was completed after the car test was passed.

So i passed the car test on 03/04/2008
and i completed the CBT on 19/10/2008 (just expired)

My understanding of that bit above means i dont need to complete another one, because i completed the course within 2 years??
Sorry for this, its kinda confused me now!

For a 125 you'll need a CBT

You only have the legal right to ride 50cc if you passed your car test before Feb 2001.
Otherwise, you need a CBT regardless Thumbs Up

I passed my car test in 2008, did CBT 2 weeks later. Still didnt give me moped entitlement. Pretty much stick with the "pre-2001" thing.

Edit : upon reading that text...it clearly states "life of licence" which is talking about the CBT certificate - being 2 years.

CBT plus car licence after 2001 = moped full.

Life of licence means licence. Not 'provision' being your moped

So a moped rider with a full car licence taken last week can ride a moped for the rest of their life... How comes my licence never allowed that?!

Which end of Buckinghamshire? It's a sort of tall thin county. If South Bucks then Quickstart in Maidenhead get my vote.
But you are probably Aylesbury or somewhere.

Excellent, same here, I did my DAS with them and my Mrs did her cbt. No issues that I can remember, but they don't suffer fools gladly.

Taken from the official government website:

"for moped entitlement only, if you pass your car driving test whilst your DL196 is still current or complete a CBT course and obtain a DL196 after passing your car test, the certificate is not subject to expiry, you will therefore need to keep your DL196 certificate safely. Please note that this applies to mopeds only, for riding motorcycles as a learner the DL196 remains valid for two years"

So, yes they can.

End of. Wink

Stop talking bollocks.

As the back of the CBT certificate states and I've stated several times before.

If you have a full car licence (regardless of the date you obtained it) and then pass a CBT test.

You will have 50cc (category P) entitlement for the life of your licence. You will not have to take another CBT again, you can also throw away the L Plates.

If you want to ride ANYTHING other than a 50cc MOPED without obtaining a full licence you MUST renew your CBT.

In addition. If you pass your CBT and then WHILE THE CBT IS VALID pass your car test. The same moped entitlement applies.

All of this is explained on the back of your CBT certificate in full.
