Hi I got an R1 1998 and the offside chain adjuster bolt is siezed in the swing arm. Any suggestions on freeing it. I've tried wd40 also put the blowtorch on it but still refuses to move. I dont want to put to much force otherwise it will snap.

So any suggestions please

Had exactly the same thing on my CBR, couldn't move it at all. I let a mate have a go and he got it out with an oxyacetylene torch to heat up the aluminium swingarm and mole grips on the stump of adjuster that was left poking out.

Worst comes to worst, get the swingarm off and take it to an engineering firm to be drilled out and if required helicoiled with a new thread.

When I had a seized bleed nipple I softened that with wd40, but took about a week to do it, spraying it every day, by the end of the week it came out very easily, patience can work wonders. Good luck.

Try some plus gas on it, muh better than wd40, leave for 24 hours, give it a ouple of good bangs with a mallet then try it.

WD 40 has got to be the most overrated 'engineering' spray ever.

I agree, WD40 is pretty carp at anything other than what it was designed for (a Water Displacer) but TBH I have only ever had limited success with plusgas too. It's good for non seized/rusted but a bit stuck threads but it has never helped me with anything rusted in properly.

Next time you use it on something really rusted/stuck, have a look at the threads, I bet there is no plusgas in sight beyond the first mm or so (suggesting it hasn't penetrated). I admit I do still use it in case it MIGHT help, but I don't think it often helps much, if at all.

Have heard that diesel is just as 'good' as plusgas.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions, will give them a try and hopefully will get lucky. I dont really want to go down the line of taking the swingarm off but if I have to then I will do it when the chain needs replacing. No point in splitting it if I dont have to.

Cheers AJ
