Dont quote me but i think that you may find that its a joint venture between the Brits and yanks. So we will have no choice but to buy the bloody things.

Hmm, not so sure, it still has the two large front intakes to feed the motor.

Looking at this vid it appears to have two exhausts?

One middle front of the fuselage, and the big one at the rear?

Wiki only has info on the standard aircraft, very little about the VTOL version. Perhaps it runs a smaller turbine for VTOL?

EDIT-

Seems it runs a dedicated lift fan. The flap rises up to expose the intake of this fan. Thumbs Up

Welcome to ten years ago?

We paid 2.5b towards development costs, software problems were sorted in 2006, we were due to buy around 140 of them before the banks took a dump. We'll more than likely start selling our typhoons off soon and drop the order for JSF's down to about 40-50.

The latest thing is that we are not going to buy any of the VTOL F35Bs, instead we are going to install catapults on the new carriers and go with the F35C version that the US Marines are also buying.

Not sure what the actual deal with France is, not sure there's any agreement at all yet.

The F35-C is better at some things than the -B, so it's not all bad. The only thing I don't understand is how the original decision to go with the B was to cut costs, but now they've suddenly got no money they decide to go with the -C to ... wait for it ... cut costs.

The French don't really need one for a few more years to be honest since the Dassault Rafale already has a carrier variant.

Pretty much everything as far as I know. Sidewinder, AMRAAM, JDAM etc. I think the UK version should be able to use ASRAAM and Meteor (once it's ready). Don't know about Brimstone. The have an internal 25mm cannon as well.

This thread is almost an excuse to post this.

My cousin is in the navy and used to repair harrier for a living, he took me and my dad round a load of them about a week before there last flight there are a fantastic aircraft. They have just one engine and the trust is piped to different area of the plane to control it in a hover.

ALso what I found interesting is so much of the aircraft is rigged with explosives, want to eject? Press this button to blow up the semtrex above you head and below your seat. How does it detach from the plane? Fancy mechaism? Nope press is button to blow up the attachment, same with the drop pods too.

The UK ditched the F35B (STOVL) version in favour of the F35C (CATOBAR) version. The F35B is on thin ice it seems, with the USMC rumoured to have traded scrapping the expeditionary fighting vehicle in order to keep the F35B from being exed for 2 years. If they don't get working within two years, it will probably be axed. If the USMC cut their order (around 400 aircraft) no other country will be able to afford to sustain the F35B production, unit price would be ridiculous, though the other two variants will still go ahead. The F35B is proving to be quite a troubled variant, its having problems with actuators wearing out faster than expected, its heavy, apparently some structural problems as well, and there are other problems which aren't public knowledge.

There are several flaps. The big flap on the top is the inlet for the vertical lift fan. Underneath is the exit for the lift fan. There are also two other, smaller flaps underneath which are weapons bay doors. The bay doors are left open to improve the efficiency in vertical landing as the F35 doesn't have strakes like a Harrier does.

The situation with the source code seems unclear, the statements are forever conflicting. There seems to be concern about giving the engine control code away, as it would be more than a bit useful to Rolls-Royce, and lacking that code makes no difference to operational soveriegnty. Code for the combat systems and to a lesser extent the flight contol system, is useful to us though.

The intakes on the front feed the engine. The duct on the top feeds the lift fan with air to blown down.

The F35C has longer range and a larger (but also draggier) wing, is fitted with an arrestor hook and some other crap for CATOBAR operations, bigger weapons bays (2000lb class), and IIRC has an extra fuel tank in place of the lift fan. Both have the same EODAS IRST and the APG81 X band AESA radar. The two did used to have the same weapons bay, until the last round of slimming on the F35B caused it to be cut down to 1000lb class.

It depends on the aircraft stage, they come in blocks, later blocks have more capabilities. The aim is for them to have short and medium range air to air missiles, in RAF service this will likely be ASRAAM for short range and Meteor (and possibly some remaining AMRAAM) for medium range. The short range will do ~30km, the medium range AMRAAM ~65km, Meteor 120km perhaps), those are just ballpark figures, it depends a lot on where the two aircraft are, their air speeds, course and their relative altitudes and the target's capability to climb/turn/accelerate/decoy all make a massive difference. They will also have either laser, GPS or mixed guided bombs such as Paveway or JDAM and have a CEP of under 3 meters (depends on the system). There are also standoff missiles (cruise missiles) with the same accuracy as the bombs, with ranges in hundreds of miles. The B and C both have 25mm Gatling guns, but these go in pods and aren't often going to be carried. There are a fair few more, but most won't be in RAF service.

The aircraft itself should be able to use its radar as a directed energy EM weapon for jamming ect, but this isn't going to be implemented until much later blocks if at all.
