New to Biking

Hi, I'am Scott from NI and I finally made myself get a bike

Been wanting one for years but it wasn't financially viable, but I managed to pick up a 1996 Honda CG, sandblasted and repainted the frame and tank and replaced what needed to be replaced.

More or less ready now for the MOT!

Welcome to the forum and be careful when you get on the road buddy. With no CBT over there any one can get insurance and get on the road.

Thanks guys! I'am lucky in that a friend of my uncles used to be an instructor, so I'll be getting free lessons and trying to get the full license before CBT comes into effect over here.

Something tells me trying to learn on my own is going to end badly or I'll learn bad habits etc

Great plan. I learnt on my own and when I moved to England and went for my test I had to do a CBT first. Even though I had been riding back home for years I still needed the CBT for an English license. My instructor pointed out several bad habits I had picked up and knocked them out of me before test day.

I was riding a cruiser style and would put both feet down rather than keep a foot on the brake. I wouldnt check the mirrors as much. Wouldnt do the shoulder checks they recomend before pulling away from a stop.

Just the usual things everyone ends up doing but you shouldnt on test day.

The instructor once shouted across to me on the DAS course "Pinky if you dont get that foot back on that break I'm going to tape it there until the end of the day!"

Got the CG Mot'd and taxed today! Although getting to the centre was a nightmare, seeing as I'd had afew hours experience of 1st gear in a carpark! Clutch control left much to be desired....

I may have stalled about a million times at each set of traffic lights
Then ran out of fuel about 100m down the road from the MOT centre after passing, also knackered a sparkplug which had to be replaced by going to a nearby bike shop! But eventually I got home safe

Aye I went to the one in Ards and went over the craigantlets to get there, the frost in the morning kinda worried me!

Embarrassing that from Bangor to Ards took me near an hour when it should take ten minutes or less

That sounds very Handy, could of just taken her to my m8's work if that was the case here!

As you go over them hills towards Bangor theres a great big left hander, Blackwood golf course is to the right and just on the other side of the bend is a low bridge. That corner is a killer. Be careful around it. Its had many people off as it tightens just before you leave it and very missleading.

Lovely roads over the hills though but you really need a bigger bike for it.

That Ards MOT centre is a pain though. Way out in the sticks!

Thanks for the advice! The low bridge is annoying as lorrys etc have to go through the middle which happened on the way back, although only being at 30 it wasn't an issue for me to slow right down.

I hear folk from ards have webbed feet , although it could be worse they could be from Comber

Back to the OP. I grew up around Stormont and last place I worked over there is the Old Moat Inn in Dundonald. You've probably been in there at some point. Most people have.
