milky substance?

hello,

Jus a quick question, I took the tank of my r6 to do something the other day, there is some kind of breather, looks like a minature airbox under the tank. I removed this so i could get a better look at something and there were traces of milky oil in the pipes???

Prob just getting worried! Head gasket??????

Iv found such where waters got in the oil before. So possibly.

Crankcase breather?

Given the cold, frosty weather we've been having, there is a high likleyhood of condensation forming in the crankcase which would emulsify with the oil to form a mayonaise-like substance.

Generally speaking, a good long run to get the engine up to temperature will shift it.

This.

However double check your oil through the sight glass/dipstick and the filler for evidence of milky gunk. If it is there and doesn't shift after a reasonable length ride then it could well be your head gasket. Have you noticed a drop in the level of coolant recently?

Yes it is an oil breather, certainly wouldn't be too concerned this time of year - my SV's oil cap is milky-as! ... it clears up come summer.

As suggested, dip the dipstick and check the actual oil itself is water free. there shouldn't be any notable amount of milkiness in the actual oil.

Mine too, untill it had that 3 hour ride on sunday Cool (had to test the new lid)


As has been said this and steam from the exhaust are perfectly normal in cold and damp weather, but if you want total piece of mind mark the fluid level in the coolant tank when the bike is cold, after a good ride re-check it the next morning Thumbs Up

Some bikes have a catch-pot for collecting this. You are supposed to drain it once in a while.

Yes, I usually get my wife to drain my milky substance when I can't hold it in any more. Thumbs Up

Aye. Check out what happens when you try to fit an emissions compliant breather system with catch pot to an engine that was designed in the 1950's (which originally vented to the outside air, although most people pointed the breather pipe at the chain which then self-oiled).

A good example of what mayonaise looks like (there is a duck-bill breather in that pot somewhere. One of the main reasons my Bullet was burning so much oil)
