I got my CBR600RR in November, so as you know... weather has been pap.

I've noticed that the bike's temperature is sitting at 78-80c constantly, if i stop it'll go up to 90c reasonably quickly, and has been up to 100c a couple of times and the fans almost kicked in (no idea what temp is does kick in) and it smells of heat/burning everytime i stop.

Is this normal? It's not exactly warm outside and I'm worried come summer and 25c it's going to be on the fan constantly.

As well as this, on way home today, pissing it down, i'm getting plumes of steam(well i hope) coming up through the bars, now i know there's nothing covering the downpipes but it's freaking me out, along with the smell of heat/burning i'm worried!

Any help appreciated

Karma aplenty.

All normal. I'm sure I had my RR up to well above 100 degrees one day in completely grid lock traffic in the summer. I was so hot I was feeling feint but the bike was fine.

my 600rr does all that you mentioned but my temp is normally around 80-85 this time of year and occasionally gets up to 110 in the summer.

The smoke through the bars is just water steaming off the downpipes and the smell is most likely road crap cooking on it.

Tis all normal, dont worry

Cheers guys and girls,

why they decided to not put a bit of fairing over the downpipes is beyond me, my 13 year old CBR had one! Other motorists must think my bikes on fire, hell... even i start to think the bike is on fire!

My 600f goes up to 112 in traffic, always has done. So long as the fan comes on and the temp goes down, you're ok. I think the RR feels hotter cos the exhaust is under your bum, so you're getting attacked from both sides, which makes you notice it!

I had a CBR600RR briefly and mine did the same, although worse, it would usually sit at around 90+ even when riding and when stopped in traffic it would go up to nearly 110. I got stuck in a bit of traffic one day (this was spring but warm) and although never stopped I was filtering and the bike actually boiled over without me realising, just couldn't believe it had got so hot, it hit 123 degrees (fan was on) and coolant was peeing out of the overflow.

I figured it was definitely not right and pulled it to bits, seemed there was nothing wrong though so i've no idea, when I sold it I had the bike sat running on the driveway for ages and the temp was oddly just sat at a very stable 75 degrees, I think the heat from the engine working is more than the cooling system can cope with so at tickover it's fine. The latent heat when you come to a stop in traffic is worse though so it boils up. Poor design, my 954 is nothing like it, although as flumpy says it does run hot in warm weather, around 85-90 but the fan kicks in at 105 and will stop it going further. Actually feels just as hot as the RR because the bike's frame is directly below the seat and heats up with the engine.

My S4's optimum temp is 88deg according to the manual, I have seen it hit 112 the fans kick in at 120. A Triumph mech told me it is fine up till about 120 degrees soon after that it will turn itself off.
