Hi guys, need to change the chain and sprockets on my Hornet.
First time looking for chains so I would like a bit of advise.

What's with the X-ring ones? Is it worth it? Or should I play safe and just buy the OEM one?

Which of these would you go for:

OEM -» £73.02

or
Gold DID X-Ring Chain -» £96.19

Need advise...

Thanks Thumbs Up

OEM's fine on them to be honest. I think it's a pretty decent chain anyway IIRC.

Thats a pretty good price for the DID tbh. But its going to cost £24 more so it has to last roughly 30% more miles to equal the cost of the OEM mile for mile. So on a chain that lasts say 15k, the DID has to last 20k mile for mile.

In the long run they probably equal the same value for money. You might have to adjust the DID one a couple of times less but apart from that I can't really see a massive advantage.

The DID will take to storage better though, so if the bike is laid up for long periods of time I would go that way.

Hope that helps

The NON gold DID chain i.e. the (525VX) is the same price as the OEM chain. I would go for the DID over the OEM in this instance. I have the same chain and sprocket kit as in the link for my CBR, it came with JTS sprockets.

https://bikespeeduk.com/epages/steer2916.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/steer2916/Products/1173VX

I also got my chain tool from them, it's good for the price, I have even seen the same tool but branded by motad for £60+:

https://bikespeeduk.com/epages/steer2916.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/steer2916/Products/CHAINTOOL

EDIT:
If you really want a gold one, they do them on that same site for a few quid cheaper than the eBay link you posted.

Are the sprockets on the DID X ring non-gold (525VX) better, worst or same thing the the OEM ones?

Sorry I just trying not to regret in the future for not fitting the OEM chain and sprocket kit Smile

Just to complicate things the OEM set on my Hornet was good for at least 18k. I sold it then and the C&S still had a reasonable amount of life in them. Up to a point it's about how you care for the chain rather than who makes it. Especially on a hornet which isn't a torque monster.

An OEM front sprocket should have a rubber silencer on it to stop the chain clunking a bit when you push the bike by hand, most aftermarket ones wont. Beyond that I doubt you'd notice much difference.

The kit I bought came with JTS sprockets who I'm told make quite a lot of the OEM kit for new bikes and I am happy with them.

Hi

What is the "OEM" kit you have the option of sourcing? Do you mean a kit supplied by Honda (rather than just a kit sold by a Honda dealer)?

All the best

Keith

Thanks for your replys guys.

By OEM I mean the one I'm buying from David Silver, so its a kit from Honda.

I think I going to give DID a chance.

Whats the difference on the Gold ones? Is it just the looks!?

Hi

Not certain that will mean from Honda. Probably from original Honda suppliers. Like DID.

All the best

Keith
