All You Vegetable Growers Out There

Hello all. A couple of years ago I started my own vegetable patch with varying degrees of success. Last year I did not, and now this year, I aim to start growing again. With it being the season to start preparing the soil, I thought I would make a post about it.

I am thinking of adding lettuce, potatoes, sweet corn, garlic (which was amazing last time around), carrots and possibly onions. The onions however did not work at all last time, they did not even flower. I also have a four-year-old Golden Delicious apple tree.

Are any of you growing anything this year? If so what, and do you have any tips?

mostly spuds I like, you cant beat home grown spuds. All home grown tastes nicer. No tips just read packet, plant and wait to grow.

Would like to grow tomatoes but they aren't really an option for me. Forgot about mint, we have that already, but it receeds every winter. Also going to try some corriander.

Dargon, I grew potatoes before, but they ended up being really small. How big of a gap do you leave betweeen each? I think I may need to make it larger.

Hard in pots as garden gets very little sun as well. Next house I want a damn allotment attached to it.

You can grow tomatoes on a veg patch,i've done it but can't remember what variety they were,they grew pretty well without being in a greenhouse.Lettuces are easy as are parsnips,carrots etc,just remember to stagger your seed planting so you don't get too much in one go.

last year I grew sweetcorn, some radishes for the hell of it (don't bother you get fed up after the first one), and butternut squash. I managed to get quite a lot of sweetcorn but of varying quality, the growth varied quite drastically, it all started off well then it all looked like it was suffering deficiency and then it all got past it and went on to crop but the majority was too small to eat, some was great. I personally wouldn't bother buying packet seeds for it again, i'd try a different variety as I think packet ones are too sensitive to conditions. Curiously the ones I grew in pots worked just as well as those in the ground.

The squash were a pain in the butt, they grow huge and you have to hand pollinate them, because the female and male flowers are hardly ever open at the same time and if they are it's at about 8am then you'll often never get a single squash, out of two large plants I managed to get 2 which did actually taste very nice.

Onions didn't do well lastyear apparently due to the weather, this year I plan to try something like parsnip, beetroot and not sure what else, maybe a different sweetcorn. If you do cabbage or brocoli it all needs netting off from butterflies or you'll lose the lot.

My beetroot struggled last year,partly because i had too many parsnips taking over and the cabbage whites had a field day with my broccoli,i had big plants but not one floret(?)this year.

I was mighty proud of the big ones and they were the best ever baked - just perfect!

I'm going to have to grow them in a container this year (old hot water tank!) as I obviously can't grow them in the same place again this year and the rest of my patches are too small and not really deep enough. I grew runner beans as well and they are as easy as growing your own veg gets and as long as you keep picking them before they get too big and set seed you'll have more than enough to be fed up of the sight of them!! I grew chard of various colours too and that was simple.

Other patches were fruity - strawberries and blackcurrants. I'm not bothering with strawberries this year as not enough fruit to make it worthwhile. Blackcurrants are my favourite so I'm just praying that they've made it through the frosty weather unscathed.

I've got herbs all over the garden and in a big sink by the front door as I use them all the time - rosemary, mint, parsley, thyme, oregano. I replant the basil, coriander and chives each year as they don't seem to over winter very well.
