Safety Position

I was talking to my driving instructor this evening, car, and explained the safety position, that we take while waiting at light etc, first gear, foot on back break clutch in. And he asked why we do it.

So why am I doing it?

His nerves were pretty raw after a few scary charging into roundabout moments. I blame the bike.

In case someone rams you up the arse, your foot is on rear brake so your a lot less likely to get flying off, probably into a junction full of traffic.

With front brake on you still move, with no brakes on you go flying, rear brake on seems to prevent you going so far.

When you get hit your likely to drop the clutch, then the bike will stall, left in gear it won't move very easily at all. If it's in neutral then it'll roll freely.

So its nothing to do with being in the right gear ready to pull off and having your foot on the back brake stops the bike from rolling if your on a slope, no, ok my bad. Rolling Eyes

I honestly fail to see how having my foot on the back brake would stop me from moving any further if I got hit from behind since I would probably just fall over.

Being in first gear allows you to be ready to move away and get out of the danger zone of being stationery. You also know which gear you are in and are less likely to stall.

Cover the back brake to stop you rolling forward or backward if on a hill, to stop you moving if you have a problem with the clutch (let go, or it slips), and will stop you moving as far if you get bumped from behind.

I do keep my foot on the back brake but purely to keep me still not for anything else, I can't see it making much difference on how far I would travel if I got hit from behind whether I was on the back brake or not though.

Thanks. I can explain to the instructor now, he thinks some of my driving "problems" are bike related, like charging into round abouts.

no you dont, it might be an articulated truck, and they would just flatten you.

I got hit up the arse at a set of lights. I had my right foot on the floor, bike in gear, holding the clutch in, left foot doing bugger all.

I didn't drop it, I didn't dump the clutch. I just rolled a bit, caught it, got off and did some swearing at the bint in the Punto. Laughing

well, it doesnt have to be going to fast as i recall from my physics higher M=mv so your tiny mass versus its huge mass and small velocity makes for a nasty accident

Another thing my instructors told me is that (in the UK at least) if your left foot is down it's pretty unlikely to get run over by a dozey car driver coming up too close !

part of the advanced training is stopping

stopping with an escape plan that is

so when you stop at lights you either giver yourself a bit of room in front or angle your bike in such a way that when you hear the moron behind lock up and come sliding up to you that you can get out of the way

it would be hard to do this unless you were in gear

stay in gear until you have two vehicles behind and you shoud be well enough shielded
