I have recently sold an item on ebay (Boat engine), the guy who has won it has decided that he will only pay via paypal , I do not want paying via paypal , and even said cash on collection only in the advert, where do I stand with this?

if its a collection only item then cash mate as there is nothing stopping him getting home and then refunding/starting a claim thru paypal plus paypal will take 4% or something.
contact him and say either cash or no sale

This is why I don't want to take the money through paypal.

It's partly ebays fault for insisting buyers accept paypal, which is stupid for vehicles.

If he insists on making you loose money then what can you get away with re the engine? Could you for example remove the starter motor as it's not mentioned as included in the auction. Or if it's listed as a non runner then remove a piston.

Ebay don't force you to accept paypal for vehicles? I recently listed one and didn't have to put it as an option. There is no way I would take paypal for a vehicle or any method of payment that can be withdrawn later.

As others have said, tell him to take a walk and as long as you didn't put paypal in your payment options in the auction mark him as a non paying bidder. The only reason he would be doing this is because he plans to scam you otherwise he'd just bring cash. If he's only got some wierd limited accounts that won't let him withdraw cash then he's unlikely to be in a position to be buying boat engines so again, he's full of sh1t.

I thought they did? Presumably they just proposed it, and that had the usual people getting all indignant. It was a payment option for a bike I bought the other day even though the seller contacted me imeddiatley after the auction to make sure I didn't use it.

What you need to do is send an e-mail saying that you stated cash on collection etc. if he doesn't comply, then open a case against him over ebay. Its in the 'resolution centre', i think that basically sends him an e-mail about payment or whatever, then he has about a week to pay.
I cant remember exactly, but i had to do that when selling my Gs.... TWICE! Evil or Very Mad
If you're not sure, e-mail ebay, i seem to remember them getting back to me pretty sharpish. But for god sake, DO NOT ring ebay! You will only get in touch with some indian woman on the quitest phone line known to man! Rolling Eyes Laughing

Tell him he can pay via PayPal, as long as he pays the associated costs as this was not agreed prior to the auction closing. If he does not comply, open a dispute within the resolution centre, copy all of your corrospndence with him in there. Eventually, they will award it in your favour, allowing you to relist it again, free.

Thing is though, I'm sure he can later remove payment ect, leaving me with no engine and no money ?

No, he cannot just 'take back the payment'. He would have to go through the resolution centre and prove why he should get the money back. Secondly, the money will ONLY be taken out of your account (by PayPal themselves), once you have the engine back. He has to also prove he has given it back and you have to confirm you have received it.

No, he isn't within his rights to pay via PayPal. The terms of sale have been finalized. By bidding, he agreed to the terms set out within the listing. Therefore, demaning to pay in another method is in breach of those terms. Furthermore, the method to recieved payment via PayPal can be removed from the listing.

You can't list on ebay (except vehicles) without allowing paypal as a method of payment. Writing cash only on the auction does not remove the paypal payment method.

The only person breaking the terms of the sale is the seller.

Actually, I have to disagree with this. Having recently listed items on eBay, it gives yo the option for cash on collection. Where it says payment options, and you write you pay pal, or click a box that says cash on collection.

This is the problem though, the resolution centre is nothing more than an automated service with absolutely nobody at the helm. If there is a real problem there will be zero investigation.

If the guy pays him via paypal, collects the engine and claims it was faulty and so he took it back it would then be up to the seller to prove he doesn't have the engine back in his posession. Or the buyer could post a box of bricks to the seller and use the receipt to say he posted the engine back, again the seller has to prove he hasn't got it, which is impossible. Result is the buyer always gets his money back and keeps the item. It's a tactic which is rife, a guy at work boasted to me about how he'd done it with a PSP, he seemed to think i'd be impressed by his scummy little thieving plan, he had no need to steal anything he was just an arse.
