Stinky shoes.

Anyone know of a good cure for stinky shoes?

I've got one pair of shoes which smell absolutely rancid if i wear them for longer than about 1 hour. It's so bad that i can smell them when i'm seated or standing, so i guess others are receiving the stench too.

Before anyone posts it, it's not my feet, none of my other shoes, trainers or boots smell, and certainly not rancid like these shoes do. There's nothing 'unusual' about the shoes, just a plain-ish pair of leather lace-up 'panel boots':

I don't know why they smell so bad, they don't make my feet sweat or anything, i've tried the 'industrial strength' odour-eaters, these worked for about a day, then the stink returned. It's so bad that i'm going to have to throw them away unless i can find a cure. Money's a little tight at the mo, so i'd rather not splash out on new shoes, i'd rather find a cure.

So, collected brains of BCF, how can i get rid of the stink?

Some people recommend bunging them in the freezer for a couple of days.

I'm not totally convinced by this but worth a shot? The smell of cheesy feet is caused by bacteria. Kill the bacteria, the smell goes away.

I'd have thought heating them up would be more effective but the question is how hot can you get them without damaging the shoes and how hot would they need to be to kil the bacteria?

They reckon chicken is "safe" to eat if it's up to 75 degrees throughout which implies most bacteria would be killed by that temperature. I wonder if the soles would cope with this degree of heat if you bunged them in a cool oven for an hour then gave the leather a good feed?

Freezer is an option, my work boots are about 5 years old, and have been basically abused, getting wet, trekked through mud, and never been polished or cared for, and they reeked. The lads at work though it would be funny to freeze them, after a day and a half in the freezer I got them out, and hey presto, stink was gone

Popped them in our chest freezer, will see how they do.

Why is it just these shoes though? I only have one pair of feet, surely the same bacteria would be in all my other shoes and they'd be then equally as stinky.

On a sidenote, i found it quite amusing when i saw my thread title of 'Stinky Shoes' with the last poster's name being Stinkwheel.

Maybe the insole of these shoes retain the bacteria/smell alot better than your other shoes. Trainers for instance are "breathable", I've had the same thing happen. Pair of boots I've had for about 3 year now still smell brand new where as a pair of trainers I had stank after a month. Binned them.

I've discovered neat white vinegar's not a bad pong-remover, it cleared my living room of kitten-poo stink within hours.

I was so impressed with its qualities of whiff-removal that I tried pouring some into a pair of particularly minging trainers, left them in the sink for it to soak in for a couple of hours and then chucked them in the washing machine.

It seems to have worked for the moment, although I don't expect it will last forever, they're better than they were.

Not sure that you could chuck a pair of leather shoes in the washing machine like you can with trainers ... but if you're otherwise gonna throw them out, it might be worth trying a bit of white vinegar, leave it to soak in for a bit, then rinse out the shoe, and let it dry, see what happens...

Sounds to me like the leather's wrong, if none of your other footwear exhibits the same problem. And even if it was your feet, odour-eaters would cure anything normally.

Soak them in a strong hot salt-water solution overnight, there's nothing to lose as they're unwearable anyway.

do the freezer thing, then whenever your not using them get an old sock and fill it with loose tea and drip a few drops of tea trea oil then leave the sock in the shoe, the tea seems to get rid of odours and the tea trea oil kills bacteria.

Worked for me with my old mouldy bike boots.

I've always thought freezing shoes/gloves to kill bacteria was a bit pointless. I did a bit of time in a microbiology lab, most of the bacteria you find on your skin (and subsequently in your clothing) are not killed by being frozen, just slowed down somewhat.

Old biddies use bicarbonate of soda to remove odours in carpets and refrigerators and I'm pretty sure my brother used it to mop up the stench of urine after he took a slash in a wire bin.

I'd give bicarb a go, the freezing can't hurt but I can't see any 'gains' lasting more than a day or two. As mentioned above though, heating would certainly kill off a fair few by 80C.

Not sure I'd want to roast a pair of leather shoes mind.
