far too PC.

I suppose they have to make sure they have the same percentage of gay transexual nigerians, chineese, lesbians, disabled and people that can actually do the job involved or they'd be in trouble

I had that question in the last few months - I think it was for a company called Working Links, who handle the long term unemployed on the "Fresh New Deal" bollocks.

Soooo glad I didn't get that job Smile

Tell them you don't know as, at the time of your birth, you had no language skills and were not of an age to enter into any legally binding agreements.

At what point does a question like that actually become any of their fucking business?

Maybe there are jobs where it might matter ... ?
But right at this present moment, I have a stinking headache and am too grouchy to be bothered thinking what they might be.

Application forms are a joke. Yesterday I spent ages filling out a 15-page application form for charity work. Long gone are the days of someone knows someone who needs someone to start Monday.

I remember these days, when I was a lad and before I realised the benefits of self employment. Now i just need to realise the benefits of emigration.

Turn up, get asked a few questions, have a chat, ...
'can you start next monday? '...great see you then Very Happy

The exception being Apprenticeships, you can fill out an online application, get invited to interview in days and start the following day if you are lucky!! (or not so lucky, as minimum weekly wage is £100) Exclamation

Soon there will be a question saying:

At what age did you loose your virginity?

I can tell you application forms are the biggest load of shit ever. All I want to do is speak to a human being about why I'm suited to the job.

You can always opt out of the question, while i'm not up on employment law i'm fairly sure that as a company reaches a certain number of employees it has to make sure it's employed a few disabled people and some ethnic minorities, not sure whether they also have employ some transexuals too to avoid falling foul of discrimintaton in work laws, not exactly sure how they go about finding any if there's none available. Positive discrimination is illegal so it's done under the guise of statistic collection on applications, the police are the major culprit, illegal behaviour masked under some other description.

I presume that's for hands-on apprentices. We have a few at work on the current modern apprentice scheme, doing what is laughably called an apprenticeship in administration. So an apprenticeship in the most basic office job that any 6 year old can do. Good thing to get on to though, doorway into a civil service job in London paying around £20k at 18.
Selection was quite complex for them. An application form and interview with the apprentice agency, of which I think about half made it onto the agency books. This is then followed by an application for each job they are interested in with assistance from the agency, and an interview for each job with the employer. The agency put forward about 4 of their best candidates for each job.
Took a few months in all, but did provide the right people for the jobs.

As a purely unrelated side-note, i was one of the 'guinea pigs' for the whole MA scheme back in the early/mid-90s.
Despite the scheme folding early due to a government rethink/cock-up, i really enjoyed it, learnt some valuable engineering skills, and ended up with a job out of it.

Thumbs Up

Surely making sure that they employ so many of 'this' type, and so many of 'that' is discriminating in itself? its like they have to go out of their way to find them and not just pick whos best. Its a load of rubbish.

Unless the company who had that on their app form are "positively discriminating" (ie looking to employ transgender employees over others who are not), then it is an illegal question from 1 October 2010

The idea is, that if an organisation aren't recruiting minorities, they must be discriminating against them in the hiring process consciously or unconsciously. So a quota is introduced to force the organisation to recruit the 'correct' amount. However it may simply be that there aren't the people with the skills in the under-represented minority. So what you actually do is recruit people less able to do the job. This means that minority applicants are substandard, and get recognised as such in the organisation, which reinforces predjudices where some minority applicants may be just as good but get lumped in with the others who got in on the quota.

I dont post for ages and everytime I do you have to pop up! Razz

Colin yeah its all good in theory but then if theres a company putting that into practice, say for example I'm applying for a job and get put against said type, lets say I am the right candidate and they are well under par, they get chosen - I'm being discriminated against there. Thats the way I look at it.

Thumbs Up

Yeah I agree it's discrimination. I dont agree with it, just explaining the thinking behind it, and why in my view the thinking is wrong.

Classic case is women MPs.

There has been a big push for women MPs. The leadership love it, as instead of getting men who were local politicians who beleive in principals, they get career politician women who toe the party line.

Far fewer women put their names forwards to be MPs than men, so if you insist on women, you are straight away vastly reducing the number of people you pick from.

The fact is that many women have other priorities in life than career, as kids are important, so to expect parliament to be half women, means you will be picking women from the small number of women who want to be MPs, a much smaller talent pool, so less chance of good talent.

As metioned, so called 'positive' discrimination is allowed, and perfectly legal.

IIRC, Without going into too much detail, if you're a straight, british, white bloke of christian or no faith then your application goes straight into the bin / bottom of the pile.

If you were up against an under-represented group (ethnically, sexuality, faith or gender based or whatever) for the same position they are allowed to discriminate in favour of that group, but not allowed to discriminate in favour of the white guy.

an example in action - a mate of mine has applied to the fire brigade several times only to be turned down several times. an ex marine, fitness not an issue etc etc.

A 4"5' fat lesbian bird who used to work in his office got in straight away (despite telling us all in the pub she struggled with the fitness tests)

Now, If im stuck unconcious in a burning building, i'd rather someone turns up who can carry me out, not have to wait for the 'real' firefighters to turn up.

Anyway,

As I am white, straight, of no faith and 'still have the gender i was assigned with at birth', I usually tick the prefer not to say option on questions relating to faith, sexuality and ethnicity in order that I am not discriminted against (at least in the pre interview stages) for being what I am.

This makes me sad Sad

edit: IIRC the whole idea of positive discrimination was Harriet Harman's idea - Another shining triumph of the labour Govt - up there with the human rights act.....

edit 2 : What colin1 says +1
