You need a number plate light
Not sure on exhaust, tbh, ive not seen a catalytic converter on a bike, so changing the can should be fine. ____________________ Eat well, poo hard

It will fail on the numberplate light. I'd suggest you buy some connectors and un-snip the wire. Why did you snip it in the first place?
The pipe is down to the oppinion of the tester, it's supposed to be "No louder than the standard exhaust on a similar type of motorcycle" in his oppinion. If it has "Not for road use" stamped on it, it'll fail if he sees it.
EDIT: Emissions are not tested. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Agreed. You need the light, but the exhaust is very much subjective. The exhaust should have "BSAU 193 or BSAU 193a or an EEC approval number prefixed by a small 'e' marking or an ECE approval number prefixed by a capital E," but bat your eyelashes and you may be OK.
There's no emissions test, and no plans that I know of to introduce one. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

If bikes don't have emissions tests, then why do manufactuers build their bikes to meet the strict Euro regulations?
Most new sports bikes have a huge cat' built into the exhaust collector. ____________________

For type approval. A few of the new bikes get tested.
It's an anomaly that bikes don't have emissions tests as part of the MOT. Brussels is suggesting mandating "tamper-proof" parts on new bikes (from about 2017 or so) to try and stop us fixing bikes from their mandated strangled state, but there's currently no suggestion that I know of - at European or UK level - of actually emissions testing used bikes. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Do all bikes need number plate lights or just bikes after a certain year. My NSR hasn't got one. ____________________ Current: Honda Nsr 125

A while ago for the CRM they actually stuck some tape over the clear section of light because they said it pointed back rather than down (dirt bike with angled mudguard) too much. Were happy with that - though next MOT of course said the opposite . |

To clarify, "tamper proof" means "shear-bolts, or only removable with expensive dealer tools". See 97/24/EEC and its followups.
Exhaust, fuelling and ECU are the proposed components to be covered. Also, mandatory ABS on bikes > 125, or linked brakes on 125 and under. That's in addition to the Euro 5 emissions standards that will come in round about 2015. That may include a high mileage retest during the type approval process, which will remove another bunch of bikes from the market and push prices up yet again as manufacturers have to eat the R&D costs and increase build quality.
Good news for Chinabike hataz though - I don't see many of them passing that. Although they are getting pretty good at scamming the emissions tests, just as everybody else does.
Despite what 97/24/EEC says, I believe that eventual goal is to prevent home servicing of bikes. The ostensible argument for anti-tamper is the usual safety and environmental reasons - hug the baby dolphins - but I'd expect it's really down to the industry successfully lobbying to squeeze more cash out of us. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
