Question

Well, the thing is, at some stage this year I want to change the SV for another naked/muscle bike, but what...

Bit of background, had a Zephyr 550 a while back and LOVED it, grieved me to sell at the time but I couldn't keep and run two bikes, plus is was a bit sluggish carrying me the Missus and rally gear so I was thinking of picking up a decent 750 version*, but I've since looked at other bikes such as the XJR1300 and CB1300, only thing is they demand silly money...

I'd like ideas for bikes similar to those mentioned above ( not chops though ) that can be had for £2000 or less and above 600cc if you please, pictures would be a bonus...

*Not too keen on the 1100 version for some reason...

You'll easily get an XJR1200 for less than 2 grand

Seb, I'd forgotten about the twelve and the ZRX, that's why I started the thread as bike names are escaping me at the minute...

Blue, a couple of mates have had or have them but for some reason they just don't do it for me, I honestly have no idea why either...

For me they were the original muscle bike.

For a small amount over 2k you could pick up an old Fazer thou. Same engine as the R1 just tuned for shit loads of tourque instead.

The Old Fazers in general are great. The 600 would carry me and my girlfriend along at 33bhp with out any problems atall.

EDIT:

Also a bit of history about them:

They were 'thrown' together to compete with the Hornet and Bandits at the time.

The engine came from the thunder-cat but was de-tuned.

Brakes are off the R1.

If you were prepared for a slightly more revvy motor then the 600 would be suited. Its a bit sluggish below 7k rpm, but after that its a very good smooth delivery. You can pick up a very decent 600 for 2k.

On a 1300 0-60 about 3.7 top speed about 140. So can't be much less on a 1200. I'll have a nosey around the OC to see if I can find any info.

Vincent, I'm lead to believe the 1000cc is better than the 750cc and I've not seen many 1000cc's for two grand or less...

After the ZRX and the XJR postings I'm leaning more towards those at the moment, if anyone has any more suggestions of bikes of that type please post them, age isn't really an issue as the 550 I had was an old H reg with over 30.000 miles on and it never missed a beat...

Most 33bhp bikes would.

The problem with Fazers is that nobody wants them. They're not desirable: I've come across a number of dealers who - without pompt - have told me they just can't shift SH Fazers and a couple have even said that they'd take more or less anything but Fazers in PX. They didn't claim they're bad bikes (by most accounts they aren't). They just don't sell. So they're a bad investment. The fact that new ones are massively overpriced doesn't help their credibility.

The proper muscle bikes are much more desirable, and much cooler. Better investment. And though they're not as quick as a Fazer 1000 at the limit, I imagine they're just as much fun, if not more (especially at sensible speeds).

No way I'd have a Fazer 1000 over an SV1000. But I'd definitely consider an XJ1200, GSX1400, or CB1300.

Budget suspension seems to be the main criticism of the 750, massively popular on the continent though, may have even been the best selling bike for a while if I remember correctly.
