Posted: 20:05 - 16 Jan 2011 Post subject: Repair or replace ::UPDATE:: Repaired! |
 |
|
I'm after general opinions as I keep changing my mind every time I change my underwear (1-2 times a week).
My little triumph was shelved about a year ago. Owing to several house moves, starting uni and such, I just didn't have the time/money/space to do the necessary repairs.
My question is this; should I repair it, taking great pride in keeping a fine piece of Hinkley engineering on the road and keep on riding the bike that taught me everything I needed to know about bike riding/ownership/repair/maintenance etc... Or should I scrap the little beast and wait until mid-late summer when I should have enough money to buy something along the lines of a zx9r.
The bike in question is a 1994 Triumph Trident 750. 26,000 miles on the clock, bought for £700 and about £200 spent on her to get through her last MOT (bulk of which was tyres).
The reason she was shelved was because the persistent fuel leakage from the tank became a deluge. Other issues were starting to show as well and as it was quite late in the year, I left it over winter, which then became a summer and perhaps inevitably another winter.
The problems/parts list is as follows:
Fuel tank needs replacing
Fuel tap it fused to the tank (in an attempt to stem the drip) so will have to be replaced
Fork stantions need replacing/re-chroming as they're pitted to the point they eat seals
New fork seals as the currents ones have been eaten
New clutch casing (non urgent, the old one leaked oil after my mates mum knocked my bike off its stand and grazed the casing, patched up with liquid metal)
New end-cans. The aftermarket ones are old/rotten/blowing/un-patchable
Pillion footrest hangers. The twonk who owned it previously bodged the aftermarket cans on, completely ruining the hangers/exhaust brackets.
new chain and sprocket set. owing to the awesome design, this means taking the gear selector cover off etc and replacing gaskets etc
Spark plugs (why not, doing everything else huh)
new pads all round (fronts have a lovely performance enhancing coating of fork-oil)
New front discs (this one is questionable, they're not warped, but don't look to have worn evenly, possibly due to the fork oil interference).
Carbs will have to be stripped/cleaned/balanced too.
I already have plenty of oil and a spare filter.
I think that's about it. I do truly love my little trumpet. It's a beautiful bike to look at and although it's a little heavy to push around, it's a dream to ride. The engine is solid with no rattles, and it starts/runs perfectly. The frame is tip-top too.
Any ideas on what I should do? I can handle all the work myself. Now I'm a *cough*full-time*cough* student (in uni about 14hours a week if there's a lab day) I have plenty of time and space to get it done. What concerns me is the cost of the parts. Is it beyond economical repair? As she stands, there's nothing in a decent enough condition to make breaking for spares worth the hassle. So to get rid, it'll be the big scrapyard in the sky that she goes to.
If I scrap it, I've lost the best part of a grand, and face a couple of grand expense to replace it with another bike that I want, which I won't have until late summer. If I repair it, I'm spending more money on a bike that isn't worth all that much, however, I have a bike that I know I love, can handle and possibly have it ready for an easter egg run.
All ideas/suggestions/estimates welcome

Tis all bolt on stuff. I absolutely love the thing, she's even got a name! It's just the sourcing and cost that concerns me.

Very true, although if the strumpet is running again, the bike fund will be used as a christmas in cuba fund (provided I can convince my wife that christmas away from home will be awesome) as I love cigars, rum, salsa music and nice weather!
If I decide to scrap Purdey (that's her name), can I buy your honda wetdream? Pretty please
| The Thinker wrote: | I think your looking at a few hundred quid if you shop around and do the work your self. Don't think the fork re-chroming is an MOT requirement dependant on where the pitting is.
Rear foot pegs are, breaks and chain and sprockets amongst others.
It's up to you, if you want to save for the Kwak you know when your over 25 insurance drops which will be helped by any accrued years of no claims.
I just wanna be your friend!! |
Yes I'm looking at a few hundred quid, hence the conundrum. The pitted forks are eating the fork seals. This leads to fork oil leaking out of the forks, down the sliders and onto the brakes. Not only is this an MOT failure, it's also not much fun having a bike with no front brakes and a rear brake that has the same stopping power as spreading your arms out wide to act as an air brake.
"Rear foot pegs are, breaks and chain and sprockets amongst others" are what??? this sentence makes absolutely no sense.
As for saving up for the kwak... I'm 26, have 2 years NCB so insurance is >£150 for the zx9r (I've checked) and I'm due a maintenance grant + bursary which could go an a bike should I need it, however I wont get this until late summer. I can probably scratch enough together to repair my triumph before summer provided the cost of parts aren't too excessive.
As for wanting to be my friend. Hmmm, well at first I just thought you were a billy no mates tosser. Now you also come across as insecure and needy. You remind me of that annoying scrawny short kid that every school year has that brings on bullying by his own actions, you know the one; his uniform is never clean, he ever learnt how to wipe his nose and he's often found very close to teachers as he often goes running to them for protection/to grass on the bigger boys. Seriously though "thinker", do you even have a motorbike? ____________________ 1977 Honda CG125

Hi
I am a hoarder. I would keep it intending to fix it AND buy another bike. Probably take a while to get round to fixing it.
If you have no urgency then just keep an eye out for the bits. If you are lucky you will find some cheap forks and the like (ie, I found some NOS forks for the H100 for far less than buying a simple pattern fork).
If you want a quick bodge then clean up the forks and fill in the pits with araldite. Once properly dry sand it smooth.
All the best

Nice bike pal!!
Then your a mind reader and stand in judgment of others!!
We could be friends!
Riding bikes are lonely empowered positions which can rise to thoughts of personal exceptional ism sometimes leading to rash mindless outbursts and judgements of other people!!
Evil is on the planet.
Hopefully what makes us human is mindful volition/free will, consciousness/our souls.
I am sure we have a lot more power for good than we know!
As a result of the activities of some corrupted unscrupulous mindless avaricious leaders or mindful evil intent by empowered people???, human, minds, free will and the consciousness of our souls is concealed.
The concatenation of events which leads to the concealing of the soul is the likes of capitalism, materialism thus subjectivism, and consumerism which leads to greed and the building up of our egos on that which is purely material and false.
Methodologies like old colonial divide and conquer, communism and autocracy allow individual free reign on peoples minds as they continue to attempt to indoctrinate people.
Over legislation as a result of bureaucratisation/out of touch corrupted empowered people takes away free will.
Examples are intrusive stop and searches, digitalisation of our economic system making people totally dependant on it, and the police carrying out entrapment sting operations in the likes of impoverished parts America. This make the police vigilantes not police of the public.
Why tempt a poor man with a shiny new mountain bike left on a street corner in a dog eat dog country or area of high unemployment???
I believe we have much greater power for good and human advancements in terms of technology than we know
We can can not dictate what we think we know best in order to change the world and how we are, we can only face and change our selves.
By doing so the effect we have on others initiates a concatenation of cultural perpetuations to the end of all time, hopefully for the greater good.
Generally as a result of environmental factors, and other than relevant moral or weak immoral cultural perpetuations of modus operandi, we are all human beings capable of tremendous acts of humanity and self realisation as long as we don't go through life justifying bad deeds to our selves,
We ride on the devils back providing he takes us where we want to go.
People do unfortunately go through life without looking or facing them selves, and think they can master the world building their ego's on that which is material and non-spiritual justifying absolutely anything to them selves.
But you know, as does everyone else that we can't justify absolutely anything to your own true spiritual conscience. Nobody cheats the big Mr “G”
We all have this although some wish to ignore or deny it..
One of the 4 Veda's, dated 1500 BCE translated form Sanskrit to Tamil by Ramana Maharshi “Tat Tvam Asi” in English is “That Thou Art”, over 1500 years later Jesus say's, “I and My Farther are One”. Also Luke 17-21 The kingdom of God within you.
God bless, one day you will grow up!!
P.S, don't tell me I got it from Paradox by using Google Sherlock, because that's me!! ____________________ In Greek mythology Ichor is what immortals have in the place of blood

Im pretty sure i have most of those things - Im also thinking of selling my bike shortly too so the spares will be no use to me.
If you decide to fix up and need bits mate, i have:
Spare tank (Black with gold Triumph - useable but cant remember if it has the tap or not)
Clutch casing (whole spare engine in fact)
Original silencers (only replaced for a pair of upswept Daytona ones)
Spare set of carbs and plenty of bits. But will prob be easier to just order in the essential rubbers/o-rings etc.
