I watched a program about mind control on iPlayer, clicky, it was very interesting and touched on some topics that have been discussed in great detail on here. I knew we liked to follow social convention but I didn't realise how strongly we did. It makes you realise how important society is in defining what sort of people we are. Also I was shocked to the extent some scientists would go on performing experiments with humans. The last thing with controlling flies was very interesting too. Well worth a watch Thumbs Up

Just watched it, was quite interesting, I saw the electric shock experiment on Derren Brown the other week, can't stand the guy but decided to watch it to confirm my dislike for him. I don't really find it difficult or amazing to see that people do hand over responsibility in the experiment, I find it curious that its so shocking really, most people will happily pass over responsibility if it's offered and fall in line.

I watched it when it was on. It's an interesting prog yeah but I found the repetitive images of electro convulsive therapy (ECT) pretty distressing - you only really need to see that kind of thing once, I don't see why they had to show it again... and again.... and again....

The animal experiments were pretty upsetting to watch too.

The experiments mentioned in the prog will be very familiar to anyone who has studied psychology at even a basic level since they're held up today as examples of the extreme methods used in the early days of the study of the mind before stricter guidelines were developed about what is acceptable - studies like that wouldn't be allowed today.

What a lot of people don't realise is that ECT is still used in extreme cases of severe depression when all other methods of treatment have been ineffective, despite no one really knowing quite how it works - scary Shocked

I'll bet it beats the shit out of Jeremy Kyle or I'm a fucking cunt in a jungle, so with that in mind, go against the grain and watch something intellectually stimulating Thumbs Up

It is interesting and worth watching. He gets injected with the hallucinogenic stuff in Magic Mushrooms and has CAT scan while he is tripping. It was interesting to see how it worked and found his account of it interesting.

I agree about the ECT stuff, it isn't pleasant viewing. I learnt about when I was 17 after a trip to an art gallery (Guggenheim in Bilbao) in which it was shown continually on this one exhibit. I then went and looked up information about it as I didn't think something that looked brutal could be an actual medical treatment.

Have just watched the next programme in the series, also worth a watch if you're interested in that kind of thing. This next one is about emotions - fear, love and rage.

There's more footage of the well known unethical early experiments with young children and animals including the famous "baby Albert" experiment in creating fear and the experiments with baby monkeys to discover the origins of love.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00x7cb5/The_Brain_A_Secret_History_Emotions/

The part I found most interesting was the brain imaging techniques used to assess someone's level of empathy/psychopathy and the guy towards the end of the programme who's lost the ability to feel emotion since an operation to remove a tumour from his brain Shocked

Seems like a good place to post this. It's a documentary following Dr V.S Ramachandran called "Phantoms in the brain", and examines a number of extremely interesting anomalies in neurology. I'm 3/4 through the book of the same title and it makes you really think about how complex, intricate and amazing the human brain is.
