New Biker looking for a decent 125.

So far the two most likely candidates are the RS125 and the NSR, I had my heart set on the NSR until a few days ago I saw a few pics and realised the bike actually looks a hell of a lot smaller than the other 125's going, such as the RS and the Mito.

I'm about 6'1"ish so obviously I dont want to look like a complete git when I'm riding (In full leathers hopefully). I'm also a 20 year old first time road user (apart from riding a pushbike a few times on the road when I was 14) so as much as I'm looking forward to getting a bike I'm also a bit scared of not being road savvy enough to ride one.

I've also been looking at insurance quite a bit, they all tend to be around £1200 for TPFT, which seems a bit high to me, even taking into account my low experience.

You'll fit on an NSR just as easily as any of the other 125 bikes.

Insurance costs will really depend on your postcode mainly, but online quotes are not really useful for anything other than comparing how different bikes will be for insurance. Either get a copy of Bike Trader and ring every single insurance company in the back and when you have it down to the cheapest few ring them back and get it as low as they will do, or pay Danny £30 and he does all that for you. £1200 does see quite high I would reckon assuming you're in a fairly average postcode you'll be looking around £750ish give or take a bit, but that's just my random guess.

Wearing leathers won't make you look a git, but walking around without your skin might do.

I'm definately wearing leathers, be it on a 50 cc ped. I'm just saying I don't really want to look like a bit of a monkey being a pretty tall guy on a tiny bike WITH full leathers.

I wear full leathers on my RS. Don't worry about it!

I checked out all the insurers that advertise on the MCN website. H&R were the cheapest by far for me, however everybody's circumstances are different.

I`m 6 foot 1 and although it`s a little tight on the RS, it's not that much bother.

It could be anything upto 4 and assuming he has no claims or convictions then that could be possible. Not exactly affordable or cheap though. I'd reckon that'll be with quite a high excess as well. Worth at least sticking your details in and just getting a quote to see what they come out with, assuming they will they won't even quote me.

If you can get a quote of say £500 online you'll be able to get it cheaper by phoning around and haggling with the insurance companies just takes a bit of time and effort, but it's worth it when you get your insurance cheaper. Or as said, Danny can do it for you and if he gets you a cheaper quote it only costs £30.

I dont have any convictions and as I'm a first time road user no claims or any NCB at all. Just seen one for about 800 pound on the site that was recommended a couple of posts up.

I'm 20 and I bought an RS last week, loving it to bits. I was told to go to Danny for insurance, and he got me a quote for £305 Third Party and Theft.

I advice you to go to Danny. I'm sure he can knock hundreds off your insurance, which is a MASSIVE saving.

I have heard the RS is a bit uncomfy if you are tall due to the riding position? never sat on one myself, but I am a short arse. I have an NSR, the seat is huge and I am not slouched over so perhaps a NSR would be better for you? all the 125's are pretty much the same size, Sit on them all and see which one is the most comfy

Well I'm gutted, mate's RS came back from the garage today and he saw an NSR 2001 model (red/white/blue), in mint condition for £1600, dont have the money ready yet so I'm going to have to leave it.

Going over at the weekend to have a sit on it though I think

Don't worry too much, there are always lots of others around. Other thing worth having in mind is not to buy the first one you go and look at. You'll be just wanting it and not too bothered about any minor problems you can see with it. Worth taking someone with you who will keep a level head and mind and stop you buying a heap on wheels.

I've just ordered myself a CBR today. Me being a bit of a short arse (5ft 9 ") i found it ideal for me. I really do lust for an NSR as there have been plenty advertised on E-bay and offered to me for 1700, 51 plates and 7000 miles average. Friend has one and it's very reliable and quite practical. He managed to carry a 12" drum cymbal on the back of his easily. It's very economical compared to an RS, and does 50mpg or thereabouts restricted (m8 fills his with 1.50 quid worth of fuel and lasts him about 40 miles or so... he spends more on his fags then on fuel!!!), or have u looked at the CBR with it's 4 stroke engine which is bound to be reliable. If u really do want true economy, cant go wrong with a CG, XR 125 if you want the urban scrambler come motoX style. Hope this is of some help.

Hey there, I'm 20 with no other vehicle experience or NCB. I just got an NSR 01 model, insurance is £470 TPFT but I've found out they think it's an import for some reason, hopefully when I let them know it's a UK model the premium will drop a bit. About the size, it's simmilar to the RS125, slightly higher seat and more upright peg positions. I'm 6 2" and have had no problems so far, except it's restricted.

What about Suzuki RGV 125's, are they a good 125 first bike? (I want something with a bit of juice, and I'm not a fan of the two stroke 125 sound (I'll be using it for about a year at least)

i must admit, i have got a cbr125r and im on the road constantly, the bike has never broken down or nething, its very reliable due to the 4-stroke engine compared to the mito or rs125 which are mostly in the garage have a engine rebuild.

RGV will have the two stroke sound just like any other two stroke bike will do.

The CBR will break down if you don't look after it as will any bike. A two stroke won't break down if you look after it, but the CBR just because it is a four stroke doesn't mean it is unbreakable it will break quite happily if you don't look after it.

Very true ste all bikes need TLC just 2 strokes need more and i used to hate carrying a bottle of 2 stroke on long journeys that pissed me off no end ,

You should really see if you can have even a tiny test ride on each of the bikes your interested in to see what there like before buying one then you'll know what you want.

It appears that many people tend to opt for race reps or their CG125 in disguise lol. I've decided to go for the XR125 at the last minute because insurance is 1/2 the price of that on a CBR and it's basically the same engine, give or take a few bhp, LC and different carbuerettors and - 5mph-10mph on top speed (CBR's can only manage 75 at a push and i don't really think the 6th gear is particularly practical if you're in a race.)

In my opinion, the XR is that much more of a better bike than the CBR as it's just that bit more practical. Besides if you're 6ft 2 or something, you'll not look silly on the bigger XR and you'll feel safer since a higher and more commanding view is offered. At least when i'm riding with my mates, i can keep up with them (65mph tops is acheivable on a pleasant cruise through oxfordshire).

Oh that reminds me, where can i purchase a bigger powerband for my XR? I happen to have lots of Halfords vouchers lying about!
