Some kind gent decided to break my rear indicators on my moped as it was sitting outsite my house the other day, clean off the stem leaving just the wire exposed. (I kind of expected it due to being a moped...but still Crying or Very sad)

Decided to get some cheap mini indicators from a local bike shop yesterday afternoon whilst out and about with my old man sorting out bits for his bike, but came to fitting them (wires crimped on using the bullet connectors fine) and lights all round worked. The only thing was, the front indicators are standard, and the rears are the mini ones.. They were flashing at around 2x the speed of normal.

Would this mean I need to get a relay at all or look at the resistors?

They aren't LED indicators, standard bulbs (made sure so I wouldn't think I'd need a relay) but seem to be causing an issue with it.

If I was to leave it, would it be illegal (i.e. get pulled by the police then fined etc) or would it cause problems with my electrics etc?

I reckon it's something to do with it being a scooter and the indicators being designed for big bike power outputs, aren't most scooters 6v, maybe that has something to do with it?

I really don't know but I would be surprised if they where 6v... They have big lights and power demands... How old is the scooter???

I reckon the bulbs are different wattage. It will be something to do with the relay output being to much making it flash to much..


I am hopeless with elec

It will fail a MOT as they have to flash at a certain speed.. Hence the old bill will pull you.

dunno about the legal side of things apart from they will need to flash at a constant rate. doubt the plod will pull you though.

If you want them to all flash at the same rate then it will defo be a prob with the bulb wattage.

have a look at what the wattage is on the front indis and then go buy the same for the rear Very Happy

I had the same issue a couple of years back.

Yup, if indicator relay is rated for e.g. "17-23W" it will be expecting around a 20W load (10W front + 10W back), but you've put (e.g.) 5W bulbs on the rear now.

Check the bulbs in the old indicators (if you've still got them) and match them, or just put in higher wattage than the ones you've got.

It's a 2003 Suzuki moped.. Nothing special..

I've still got the old indicators, they were on the floor so it's not 100% loss, will have a look at the bulbs and see if they are able to switch into the new indicators.

If it doesn't work, I'll try track down some of the OE indicators, not fussed about what they look like, the originals look like crap so can't be much worse!

Just solder on some inline resistors (ebay) and youre done

Buy a constant rate Flasher unit, more expensive but better than doing the above, uses less power and you wont have to hack your the wires up and create another point for it to fail. It is also simpler as it just required replacing the unit it took me about a minute to do on my bike.
