Well my bike, has developed a little whistle.

This has occurred after my bike was tucked up away for about 3 weeks due to Xmas & snow. Before this, there was no whistle.

The bike feels fine, no loss of power, but every so often at certain revs, there it is a little annoying whistling tooting noise.

I've had a look at the exhaust, can't see any obvious holes. (But it was at night with a torch). It's on the 6n, so its underneath, so not so easy to get to. I have had the downpipes go last year, which were changed under warranty, but the bike is now out of warranty.

I was thinking of buying a newer exhaust from ebay. But I wondered, if anyone had experience of this or managed to fix it before.

This could also mean every so often at certain speed or even torque.

If you find the hole I would just use wet and dry to prepare the hole rubbing off all the rust, then use exhaust weld. £5.
It's fine for MOT too as long as you do a good job.
Or just take it off and take it to a garage for welding after preparing it your self.
Just had mine done, 1cm hole, cost me £12 to get it patched.

Can't believe you had exhaust issues with this already because they are relatively new bikes. They don't make stuff to last any more.

Anyway just a suggestion, after the cold weather this year my front break calliper kept sticking along the runner they run on constantly rubbing on the front disk..

I took the calliper off and being very careful used duck oil from a spray can to lubricate all moving parts then replaced the calliper. (WD40 will do)

Couldn't agree more. This picture was taken last summer, when the bike was just under 2 years old! The rest of the bike is fine, I hose it down daily and spray with FS 365 during the winter months and it's garaged.

I think with the ER6, the fact the exhaust is about 5" from the road as it's underneath doesn't help. The FS 365, doesn't do anything for the exhaust either as it's burnt off immediately.

Saying that on my car I reckon i've done about 50K on the same exhaust, both front and back bits. Surprised

Wow that's well gone.
Amazing!! Being a penny pincher I always wet en dry and apply three coats on exhaust paint from halfords.
It can save a small fortune.

Does the bike do the noise just when on the run or when it is idling/being rev'd on it's sidestand too?

You really do need to isolate the noise before changing the downpipes. Blowing downpipes normally sounds like a tapping rather than a whistle.

Whistling noises could be loads of things; wind in bike parts, steam escaping from a radiator, pieces rubbing together (suspension, brakes, throttle cables etc) and it could also be clutch whir or something to do with the gear box.


Exhaustpipes would likely do the same thing when being rev'd whilst stationary so that is your first test. If it makes the noise then, get someone else to do it whilst you try and pin it down further. Noises that only occur on the run are a PITA to source.

Easiest way to detect small holes on an exhaust, IMO, is to run the palm of your hand a few mm over the exhaust with the engine running. A lot of times, holes are hidden from view.


Someone on here suggested this trick (can't remember who I'm afraid) - in a dark garage, light a cigarette and using a torch look for the smoke being blown away by the escaping exhaust gases.

There is always the possibility that there is a bird nesting in your bike, and the tweeting noise is the bird swearing at you for disturbing it.
