I'm thinking of up grading from a RAID array to a SSD, is there abit of software I can use to copy my Windows install, programs ETC, to the new drive without reinstalling everything?

Can't you boot the machine from the new drive and just move your existing drive's contents to the new one?

If you have a windows disc you should just be able to use your existing windows key to install on the ssd.

What are you using the array for? What is the raid level? Are you really taxing it as it is?

It's the installing everything I CBA with, it is a moderately recent rebuild anyway. Also downloading everything though steam and moving saved games about.

I was running RAID1+0 but changed to raid 5 for reliability. My plan is to keep the current array for my data drive and have all programs installed on the SSD.

Windows rates my pc and 7.5+ for everything except the HDD which is 4.1, Plus I want to make use of my SATA 3 connections.

Would Hirens be of any use?
I've never used it on a Raid array before, but i'd be surprised if there wasn't a utility on there that would do it.

Interesting site, but nothing about copying HDDs.

^^ You did scroll down to the 'Backup tools' section, didn't you?

There you'll find tools like:

Quote:

Macrium Reflect 4.2.2952
Create complete backups of your disk partitions, including operating system, installed programs and all your settings.

ShadowCopy 1.00
Copy all your files and entire system - even if they are locked by Windows.

G4L Ghost 4 Linux 0.34a
a hard disk and partition imaging and cloning tool similar to Norton Ghost.

Drive SnapShot 1.40
creates an exact Disk Image of your system into a file while windows is running.

Don't know what your O/S is but look into "SYSPREP"
It's actually a feature of windows.
It's to deploy your O/S along with all programs to multiple computers. If you have the licence which the windows hologram you should'nt have any problems.

It's really for business and corps but there's no reason I can see why the end user can't use it.
It will deploy all programs too.

XP
Vista
Windows 7.

SYSPREP is a tool that is designed for system administrators, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), and others who must automatically deploy the Windows XP operating system on multiple computers. After you perform the initial setup steps on a single computer, you can run the Sysprep tool to prepare the sample computer for cloning.
This clones all your programs too I read somewhere.

XP
excellent instructions
https://support.microsoft.com/kb/302577

Vista, I am guessing you don't use this.

Windows 7.

Not what I'm asking at all try reading the thread next time.

Hi!
No hard feelings!
I move for a vote of no confidence as a result of you not really knowing what your are asking here!
Good lad!

In your question is the word clone
I am just guessing my answer may be a little complicated for you to follow, as I don't think your great with computers, that's all!
(I have studied computer science), the reason i say this is because in a previous thread of mine I asked which stores sold the XPS 14. You posted lot of stores which sold Dell but not the XPS 14.

I don't think you fully understand or know what your asking, the reason you don't know or fully understand what your asking is because you are doing exactly that: Your asking!

"SYSPREP" is just another way to Clone, (Just another suggestion to your problem), it is also a feature of the very operating system that you are using, if you look at your question you mentioned the word clone.

This program will clone eveything as well as your programs.

Your RAID does not even check for parity, just a mere back up.
What's the point in that!
What if the data your backing up via RAID is corrupted, as a result of none parity checking RAID you back up corrupt data.
This gives me a clue in regards to computing knowledge.

Oh! and SSD's are still costly and glitchy (not perfected) at the mo, I have already been there.

Can't beat Seagate or Samsung hard drives in my opinion.

I'm honestly not interested in arguing with you,

I will make these points however

Firstly Raid 5 is for Parity, it has an extra disk which it a check disk. This means it will add up each byte in the other drives and then calculates what the check byte is, this way if a Drive goes down you replace it and the machine can work out the state it should be in.

" RAID 5 uses block-level striping with parity data distributed across all member disks. RAID 5 has achieved popularity because of its low cost of redundancy."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID_5#RAID_5

Have you read the sysprep stuff? I did, As far as I can tell Sysprep copies windows setup so admins of many PCs can install Windows configured how they want it will not copy 3rd party programs or other files like I want it to.

You can read about it here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sysprep and here https://support.microsoft.com/kb/302577

Lastly in your thread, I wasn't replying to you, somebody in your thread said Dell don't sell off line, I meerly provided links to show where dell did sell off line. I wasn't 'trolling' you the post wasn't aimed at you.

I'm not interested with arguing with you, you are a strange individual who I would rather avoid.

Sysprep has nothing to do with moving data, it's just a tool used to reset the unique indentifiers of a Windows installation (SIDs).

Until the inclusion of ImageX, MS offered no disk-duping tools with their OSs, you had to use Ghost or similar.

While worded badly, this is quite true. RAID 5 is known to cause problems when one drive is corrupting data. While the drive may not create enough of a problem for it's controller to trigger a failure event, it can render an entier stripe-set (and therefore the data within) useless. I don't want to generalise to much, but this is why the preference has been to switch to RAIDs based on mirroring rather than parity for protection as hardware costs have dropped.

That ImageX looks good I may give it a trial run, thanks Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

RE: RAID5, I found that RAID 1+0 was dropping drives far to often to be useful, these where brand new good Quality Cavalier Blacks. I haven't had a Problem with the same drives in RAID5, but that may be the controller

We've run RAID 5 arrays on our servers since the days of Novell 3 and WinNT.

Five discs with a hot swap spare in each array.

Never had a single problem with it.
When a drive fails the hot-swap automatically kicks in and the array is rebuilt using it by the controller.

Then just whip out the dodgy drive, put a new one in and the array gets rebuilt using that and the spare goes back to being a spare.

Stressless storage.

Which is true for most admins I'd say. But drive failures don't always result in the drive being tagged by the controller as 'failed', they can spew junk data into the set which makes the parity worthless. Of course it doesn't come to light until you get a true failure and try and use partity to rebuild the failed drive, at which point your filesystem falls apart. Not common, granted, but still possible.

The other problem with RAID5 is the rebuild time with larger drives. Longer rebuild time == higher risk of secondary failure during rebuild period. To make the chances [of another failure] greater, most storage is bought at/around the same time, so if the first failure was due to a manufacturing fault, its ever more likely to occur in the other drives.
This can be mitigated with hot-spares, but that just adds to the cost, doesn't reduce the time you're vulnerable to a secondary failure and also doesn't reduce the risk of corruption (see first paragraph).

It's all a game of averages. I still use a lot of RAID5 in the SANs I admin despite the above issues, it's the cheapest option (cost-vs-capacity-vs-performance) and offers enough protection to appese the risk-averse managment. Would I say it's the best solution though? No. There are so many ways to try and mitigate the risks you just have pick the best for each situation, frequently the best solution isn't the technically the best.
