Posted in the North, but as accommodation is a possibility and it's a bike related job, posted here too...

Looking for a workshop general assistant.

Position could include:
Job role
Taking cars and bikes apart.
Possibly some putting them back together.
General building maintenance.
Cleaning parts.
Cleaning vehicles.
Data entry.
Customer-facing; in person, on the phone and by email.
Various online stuff.

Experience in working with bikes, DIY/building or just general life experience is good, but not essential.
Being willing (and hopefully enthusiastic) to learn, reliable and not afraid of hard-graft is however definitely required.
I think this would be ideal for someone looking for an opening into a variety of automotive jobs. Hopefully, it will lead to a good long term job and this will certainly be influenced by work put in!
There WILL be, like most jobs, lots of boring stuff - repeatedly cleaning parts, moving stuff around or painting lots of big walls or something.
However I think this does offer a lot of potential; depending on desires, it could at the very least get your 'foot in' to quite a range of other positions.

Pay is negotiable, but certainly won't be amazing to start with, however hopefully made up with some good benefits that could include:
Possible Benefits, depending on circumstance
Free/cheap accommodation.
Possible use of company cars/bikes/vans.
Storage and use of workshop for own vehicles.
Further general training (pass car/bike/maybe even truck tests?)
Official apprenticeship training to gain NVQs in the area of your choice.
Profit share.
Cheap parts, spares etc.

The job is based in Keighley in North Yorkshire.
As mentioned, accommodation (no, not a pent-house suite, but 'liveable' at least) can be included.

Looking for a long-term employee, but also will consider people looking for short term employment now.

PM me for more details/to take it further.

Oh and yes, I checked with a Mod if it was ok to post Razz.

Hmm. The job appeals. The location, not so much.

Actually a great place to live. Cheap living costs, nice area (i.e. not run down), friendly people, and perfectly located by hundreds of miles of beautiful biking country and roads to the North, West and East.

Should have the potential to be a very rewarding job, by the sound of it. Good luck with the venture G. Thumbs Up

Eh? When was the last time you were here? It's a shithole over run with drug dealers, chavs and wannabe gangsters.

Doesn't seem too bad to me so far - definitely not compared to going further in towards Bradford/Leeds way - but shall find out over time.
No worse than Reading from what I've seen (good and places) with nicer roads, but not nearly as good access to the motorway.

Oh and I can confirm, yes they DO all speak funneh up here!

Ride through the area fairly frequently. I haven't gone out my way to explore the shittier areas of the town (every town has them), but as far as I can see there are plenty of pleasant places, and as mentioned, very convenient access to some great biking countryside.

I live 30s from the town centre. The job sounds interesting. Although i'm "between jobs" as they say, i'm looking for a bit more than painting walls/washing parts etc. I'm intrigued to know who it's for and where it is. But i understand of course, if G wanted to make it public he would have mentioned it in the OP.

Keighley is not a nice place to live, certainly not the bits I've seen anyway! Looks like an interesting job for someone who wants a foot in the door though Smile .

If I was still in my early twenties and unmarried etc I'd be snapping your hand off for a start like that. It's bottom rung, but if you start at the bottom the only way is up.

My cousin started in a garage the same way. At 14 he used to clean cars on a saturday and sweep floors for a bit of pocket money. Whenever the mechanics needed a hand (beeping the horn/turning steering wheels for MOTs) he was there. He watched them, helped them and took in everything they said. Now he's a fully trained mechanic, running his own place, owns his own house and the little sod is two years younger than me!

My Grandparents used to live there and it was very nice back then. Went there recently and it was fine, not the best of places these days, but far better than most.

What Poseidon said.

As a lad, my Dad (mistergixer senior) learnt about fettling by hanging around Croft, making the tea and generally making a nuisance of himself until they let him help out. Eventually he ended up spannering for a rally team (running a Mini Cooper).

As a lad i learnt from him by making the tea, handing him the spanners and eventually doing stuff under his supervision.

He was a really frustrating teacher though, he do the job so i could watch, then he'd take it all apart and go 'right, now it's your turn'.

I frequently irritate the fuck out of my own kids by behaving in exactly the same fashion.

There are some areas that are like an exact copy of Bradford central, as with anywhere I'm sure there are nice bits... but not too many in Keighley without your rose-tinted glasses on I'm afraid! Wink

Replied to all messages now.

I think it's not going to be suitable for a lot - for a start I will clarify - BEST it can only really stretch to is around minimum wage for over 21s (£6 or so)*.
(Though that is a decent chunk more than I was getting in my first 'big boy' job, even considering inflation etc I reckon.)

Poseidon and mistergixer have got the sort of idea of what I was thinking off - someone that can do what they're told and learn, but doesn't expect the earth.
However, still happy to consider if you are a bit more qualified, or do have more

*Possibly a bit more if you were over-qualified, but willing to work for less than the better industry pay rates due to your situation or what it could offer you etc.

Got a load of PM's to deal with, but internet gone down in the South and been traipsing up and down the country moving my stuff around (over £300 spent on diesel in three days and more to come)!
Will try and get messages out to the remaining few unanswered this evening or at latest Monday; then messages to those generally interested on Monday evening.
