Just been out for a ride and all in all had a good time, but was spoilt rather just as I was getting home.

A road near me has roadworks on one side and is down to one lane, priority being given to the traffic that normally uses that side of the road. Visibility is good from both directions.

A car was approaching from the opposite direction, but as I had right of way I proceeded as normal, the approaching car also proceeded but still had space to pull in and let me past. However they continued forcing me to stop.

Out of politeness and to avoid a confrontation, I pulled to the side of the road and allowed the car to pass. The woman driving the car mouthed the words 'fuck off' and gestured with her head as she drove past.

Now I wish I'd just sat in the middle of the road and waited for her to reverse!

Was interested to know other riders views on the situation.

you get used to that kind of crap on the roads eventually.

I've never had it happen on the bike... yet.
I have been in a 20 minute stand off with another car when I had right of way... and he didn't budge.
Strangely it's never happened when I've been driving the bus, normally I just drive straight for them and they soon find reverse

I think you should go over and over it in your head, running through all the things that you should have done, until it eats you up inside and you finally convinced yourself that she revved up and tried to ram you, and you popped a wheelie, rode right over the top of her, jumped off, ripped the door off her car and left her tied to a lamppost with a note saying "THUS IS THE FATE OF EVILDOERS IN MY CITY" stuck to her.

Or, you could accept that dealing with stupid arrogant mongs is part of what we accept when we get out of the cage, forget it, and get on with your life.

Turn round, chase her all the way to her house whilst making hand gestures and letting her know your intentions to her and her family and then meet her 6ft 10 body building husband on the drive and have a sudden change of heart about the whole situation.

In reality I would probably have done the same but I'm a stubborn ox at times and very possibly would have played chicken to see who moved first and it wouldnt have been me.

If I had right of way and she hit me I would have been straight on the phone for an Ambulance and since the police would have attended I would let them sort it out.

"Yes officer I had right of way and was making progress along when she pulled onto the roadworks. My neck hurts something terrible too."

It's not the situation that annoyed me so much, as you say that's normal. But a 'thank you' rather than a 'Fuck Off' would have been less annoying and just as much effort on her part.

^^She'll probably lose a gold blob for that.

Seriously though, there's no such thing as right of way. You might be given implied priority, and it's normally realised that traffic on the side of the obstruction should 'give way' to traffic without the obstruction - IF you arrive at the obstruction at the same time. If the 'obstructed' traffic is already negotiating the hazard, other traffic must then concede.

From what you say, the obstruction was on her side, so she was either
1 - oblivious to this
2 - already at the hazard before you
3 - annoyed that the gap would have been enough for her and you to get through without either having to stop

IMHO, of course.

Punch the window or follow them for a bit, sufficiently far back that you won't hit them if they brake suddenly. The latter works quite well, there's no need to be violent or follow them all the way home, just enough that they get a chance to think about their actions Thumbs Up

The first one sounds a lot more fun to actually do, rather than just convincing oneself that one did it, when in reality one didn't.

off to practice wheelying over cars and ripping doors off...

I would, and have, held my position in my car.

But on the bike, I'm always aware that when bike vs car, bike loses.

F-ing annoying, but probably best to forget it.

I sometimes say thankyou to drivers who move their wheels to let me through a small gap - but I often wonder whether they hear me, or whether they think I have said "fuck you", but I usually smile at them, and I have such a mousey little voice that probably they realise I am being polite and grateful instead of abusive*.

*(although I can do that, too - not nearly so mousey then, though Laughing )

Yeah I think people tend to smile when they say thank you Very Happy

But a Fuck Off! has a Mad expression and the head gesture was a 'Fuck off out the way!' type of gesture.

Still WGAS it's all good now, just pissed me off at the time Laughing
