Antivirus

I've been out of the Windows world for a while now but need some PC antivirus advice.

I've just had to install a fresh HDD into a laptop for someone and need to install some antivirus software.

What's free, effective, unobtrusive and non-bloated these days?

Laptop is running Windows 7. Thanks.

I was in the same boat and had a flick through a few reviews and I choose Avira, it hasn't really been tested but seems ok to me.

I,ve always used AGV anti-virus and Zone alarm firewall and never had a problem and l visit some really dodgey sites.......

I never use a firewall on my computers as my router has a spi firewall, most do these days.

For AV i have been using Microsoft Security Essentials for the past few months. It has Anti-Spyware/malware with it too.

Had no probs so far, been picking up things that were on the laptop when i had AVG.....

AVG and AVAST and Avira were turning out to be hogging the ram and bloated.

avg and avast used to be good but now they are to bloated and you either have to reinstall them every so often or they keep pestering you to buy the full version.

I install microsoft security essentials on all pc's i build these days and as its free for the full version it never bothers you.

I on the other hand use NOD32 which is also free if you know where to look

I use Zone Alarm Corporate but this the free version: Firewall https://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/anti-virus-spyware-free-download.htm

The best paid commercial anti-virus according to so called independent bench marking is Kaspersky.
Not a hogger all in one, best detection rates and scan speeds of zipped, unzipped files and all the nasty's.

I've had Avast for a couple of years with no problems. Seems to run fine on this new pc too. Doesnt seem to heavy on the RAM but with 3gig of the stuff its the most I have had on any PC!

avast! used to be really bloated. seems to have slimmed it-self down recently which is why i prefer it over AVG, comodo and avira.

I like the fact that if you are copying or moving files and MSE picks something up that needs a user decision, windows does throw up a "cannot continue" or a "item no longer available" or something similar.

It just pauses the task until you have made a decision.
If you need to delete the file the task will just carry on and not bomb out.


handy if you are transferring hundreds of files
