Download speed?

I'm curious to know the rough actual download speed across the country and who you're with?

I'm (well the Landlady) is with talktalk and my internet connection is through a shared open network, unlimited downloads, supposedly 20mbps in west sussex.
Through BT phone line.

Average download for me, when I'm home alone and noone else is in:

It al depends, I have a 50mb connection and when I am connected to a network that has the bandwidth for me to download at 50Mb It does, I saw 5.6MBps DLing through steam once.

I was nowhere near 10% when I used torrents.

You can't use UTorrent as your guide because you can only download as fast as others are uploading.

As for your assumption that 500k is ok for a 20mb line, well it's way off. I'm on about a 6-7mb line and download at the same speed.

Not using UTorrent, my average download is about 450kB/s.

And my internet as I said is shared between many in the house (shared house), on average there is about 4 computers and 2 laptops on, worst case (in the evenings when everyone is in) there is 5 computers, 4 laptops, 5 Playstation 3's and 2 X-Box's. Plus a couple of people have iPhones and a few others have mobiles with wireless capability...

I don't think it's too bad, just curious as to what the average is really.

Sky 20Meg, usually downloads at 20kb/s (0.2Meg), that's almost exactly 1% of the advertised speed.
Imagine you bought a 200mph superbike, only to find that flat out it's top speed was only 2mph, thats about how i feel about sky.

On Bulldog a good few years back, i would get my full 800+kB/s on an 8meg line

Actually, using torrents can be one of the best ways to test speed.
Torrentleech, Bitmetv are both great for having great speeds due to the amount of people uploading through seed boxes

Also, downloading something from a website in mavy parts/connections at the same time is better than downloading it in one big chunk as the majority of sites will limit the upload speed per connection.

To test this theory check out DownThemAll for firefox.

The only website i know that is good for a speed test is Speedtest.net.

@ Ben,

The main thing that will be slowing your download speed, apart form the actual line speed, is the wireless connection. You will never fully utilize your connection over wifi.
