Windows?
Basically I have found a bathroom design I really like, is one with built in cistern and wash basin and I'm determined to have it, however after measuring up and finding smaller suites etc there just isn't the room, unless I can cover the windows. Is this legal and is it safe? obviously windows are also fire escapes but these are pretty small windows and the last place I'd be trying to jump from as the neighbours yard below them is 10ft below my yard level, and it's not like I need the light from them(what little comes through them) as we all flick the light on when going in there regardless of wether it's neccesary or not.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that you are required to have an extractor fan in the bathroom regardless of whether there is a window now.

Chris-Red: I agree, but much as it is your house and in theory you can do whatever you like there are Building Regs and if your home doesn't meet them there is all sorts of rubbish to deal with when you sell or if there is a problem with insurance - legislation gone mad again! Rolling Eyes

Rolling Eyes I believe that if you have your bathroom refitted or if you are buying a new home, the bathroom will be required to have an extractor fan, regardless of whether there is a window.

I'm sure it's not beyond the realms to have "bathroom nazis" checking all bathrooms, but we haven't got to that stage..............yet!! Wink

if what i can remeber of the uk law, you do, and also there is a minimum amount of air that they have to shift ber hour depending of the size of the room,

if i rember rightly it has to vent the room 3-8 times per hour

eg if you bath room was 2 meters wide 3 meters long and 2.4m high
2x3x2.4=14.4m3 and we'll say 5 changes per hour
14.4x5= 72m3/h

buy a fan that is up to the job, not just a cheapo coaxial unit out of screw fix

You dont have to have windows, But it seems a shame to cover one if you have.

Can you not just make it smaller? Try talking to a proper bathroom designer place and see what they can offer, I had a bathroom without windows before, and although it was okay, I'd much rather have a window to let steam out and fresh air in than just rely on a fan.

My house was built in 2008 and we have no extractor fan. Was also refitted bathroom in 2010 with no extractor fan.

Think you only need a fan if no window.

Sorry, wrong. If you are making changes to the bathroom you will need Building Regulations approval, and this will require a fan linked to the light switch with 15 minutes over-run and providing a minimum of 15 lires/second extract rate. Windows are optional in bathrooms.

Building Regulations part F Section 1 para 1.5 and table 1.1a for the people who like to check.

This^^^

I operate on the "What they don't know about, they can't worry about." school of building regulations.

Over the last couple of weeks I wired two new sockets into the ring main, replaced three ceiling roses, wired in an extra lighting switch and entirely failed to have them inspected by an electrician.

In the near future I fully intend to drill a hole in the wall between my garage and kitchen then insert a piece of gas pipe through it to connect the two propane cylinders to the cooker.

I am also going to box in the pipework for the combi boiler.

Only becomes an issue if a) A building inspector is let in. or b) You come to sell and the solicitor actually bothers their arse checking what they are supposed to check (unlikely).
