What programming languages do you know?

Just wondering how many people here know a programming language?

I know Korn shell and have dabbled with Perl and FORTAN.

I've lumped together some groups of programs (e.g. the ancient ones like COBOL) just to make the list a bit shorter. I've only added to the list ones I've personally heard of; hopefully that will be the commonest ones covered.

Yeah if I was going to learn a new one I'd choose Python.

I've just bought an Android based tablet so Java will probably be the next language I learn so I can dabble at writing apps.

I program in C mostly, also use the microchip derivatives C18 and C30.

I can program in assembler, I love using it but its very rare that I get the chance. I love making scripts ridiculously efficient.

I also know python, I've played with perl a bit but I'm not a massive fan. I can do C++ but again I'm not a fan of using it. I can code in Matlab using their M-file language which is insanely useful for simulations.

I would really like to learn java, and if I ever get involved in any web stuff I'd imagine mysql and php would be useful to know.

Hi

Over the years loads.

BASIC - Years ago, on Spectrums, BBCs and a RM 380Z
PL/1 - Did this most of the time for about 15 years for a living. Works well and is fast. Some batch and some with CICS.
Cobol - Did a bit. Not a fan.
Toolbook - Used for about a year until VB came out.
VB - Used VB 1 and 2 in the early 1990s then landed up using VB 6 a decade later
Ideal - Language closely associated with the Datacom database. Language itself was OK, but tied to a dire development environment.
APPS - In house language at a company I did some work at
Perl - Dabbled with.
Javascript - Played around with a fair bit. Reasonable at it but need to keep playing to find out more.
Php - Currently what I use most of the time. Quite like it, although I would prefer a compiled language with more control over storage.
OPAL - A horrible product for putting a tacky windows front end onto mainframe systems. Made worse as we abused it to batch process data from a PC and type it into an existing PL/1 - CICS mainframe system. A total nightmare to debug.
PL/SQL - OK, but we lacked a useful development environment for it.
ASP - Easy to use for basics
ASP.NET - Not impressed with .NET stuff. Aim seem to be to make the easy things easier , but succeeds in making the more difficult things more difficult. Added to which that level of object orientation just makes for unreadable spaghetti type code.
VB.NET - See above
Java - Nicer than the above but too tied to pushing object orientation, and too much depends on what framework you land up using.

Probably a few more (such as Pascal and Z80 assembler) as well.

Trained in COBOL, C++ and Pascal. Picked up VB - like the STD it is (distributed by careless pricks).

I spent a few of years developing Delphi apps for use in manufacturing then switched to the sysadmin dark side.

These days I usually fiddle about with bash and perl scripts with the occasional python.

When I was a kid, I did quite a bit of bbc basic programming. Did fortran at university.

I'd like to have a go again, can anyone suggest what to try to get started ?

With a BBC micro, you could write a program right into the command prompt. I wouldnt know how to get started with a PC.

With fortran, I seem to remember you would write your program in a piece of software, then compile it then run it.

Is there anything free that I could download that would let me type in and run programs easily ? Maybe in visual basic, C++, Java, or some other mainstream language.

Use C (GCC) for most of my work (Embedded stuff). Have done plenty of assembler (Z80, ST6, ST9 & PIC) in the past as well.
Use C++ (MinGW with wxWidgets) and Java for PC based stuff.
Used Basic & Visual Basic in the dim & distant past.
We use Python for scripting stuff at work but I refuse to learn it, tis a wretched language!

Not a very good poll. no multi-choice, lots of missing mainstream languages.

started out doing basic, then pascal and c but my main languages/markup/db are ASP (classic), javascript, html, css and mssql. i have developed in php, mysql, oracle, vb as well.

im actually re-training at the moment to bring my skills a bit more up-to-date. just finished a VS2010NET40 course and I'm doing a c# 4.0 course in march.

once thats done we can start migrating a load of our legacy classic apps to .net

i do know some c# but i've not done any real development in it yet apart from little personal projects. hoping to change that once i've got the courses done.

My high school lessons started with Cecil, and progressed to various versions of Basic. This suited me at the time because it was around the same time that I'd bought a Commodore 64, and was attempting to make up some of my own games... (Yes I was a closet member of Computer Geeks Anonymous )

From memory the programming assignments for my college work was mainly Pascal. We also did minor projects with Fortran and Cobol, and had an intro to a machine code / binary system too.

...and just for the record, the extensive use of Pascal at college pretty much put me off programming for life

BASIC and a bit of Vb/Vb scripting - still using basic on a fairly regular basis at work (interfacing thermal printers).

To my shame, i'm fairly fluent in quite a few printer programming languages; mostly TPCL, EPL, ZPL and CPCL, with a few others thrown in for good measure. Barcodes give me a trouser tent.

The thing with pascal was that when trying to compile the code if there was an error it simply came up with a message that said "error", which wasn't helpful when you had circa 200 lines of code...hence why I was out off programming for life...

Admittedly most of those are at a reading rather than writing level. Recently i'm Python & C and seem to manage to use the wrong syntax in each on a regular basis. I managed to write an entire C function into my python script earlier today

I don't know any of them apart from C programming, even that is limited to fairly basic programs. Only what i learnt while doing a HNC in mech engineering.
