we have 2 cars.. a 97 Ford Ka and a 2002 Citroen picasso. Basically as we cant afford them both, theyre going and getting another car thats cheaper to insure (Ka is 600 a year and Picasso is 1400).

I'm 27 been driving 10 years 4 years no claims just purely down to the area that I live..

any suggestions ona cheap car to insure that i can pick up for about 2000 quid..

Fords tend to be high and has to have enough room for baby and buggy..

Edit - Have you looked at a Focus? I got a 2001 Focus for £1700 18 months ago, insurance for me is £660ish at 21 with 4 years NCB, not sure about room for a buggy though!

Maybe worth looking into leasing? Newer cars are generally cheaper to run (cheaper insurance, no tax, no mot, better on petrol etc)

£500 first payment and ~£150 pcm should get you something fiesta sized or around £200 pcm for something like a Nissan Juke.

Just an idea.

Under the new 50 grp system the rating factors have been generally broadened to include things like the cost to repair vehicles, the safetey of vehicles and the environmental impact that they have.

Newer cars are generally better to the environment, cheaper to repair (especially at the lower end of the market) and are safer therefore potentially reducing PI costs. Granted these factors won't make a huge difference as the majority of claims costs are TPY PI and property damage, which are inflating at an alarming rate.

As an example, the old system group 15 vehicle roughly equates to a group 34/35 under the new 50 group system.

On my postcode the gross premium for a group 35 vehicle is £5615. But an old X5 D which would have been a group 15 in old money is now a group 40 on the new system due to various factors ranging from theft stats, environmental impact and so on and the gross premium for that is £7084.

A basic Astra CD from 98-99 is new group 15, gross rate £2786 with it's modern replacement from 2007-2009 being group 13, gross rate £2657.

It's not an exact science as there are plenty of anomalies, depends on what actuarial information you use.

I've been told some crazy things by insurance companies about vehicle age. I was once told it was more expensive to insure an older a vehicle year on year because it was more likely to breakdown, I wanted insurance not breakdown cover, so unless they thought I was likely to suffer a seized engine in lane 3 I fail to grasp that one.

I also do not see how environment impact has anything to do with insurance, insurance is not a tax and is not there as some kind of green enforcement. You insuring against loss, damage and injury not insuring yourself against greenpeace for accusing you personally of damaging the ozone layer.

I would get a Toyota or a Honda tbh.

Something like a civic or a corolla or an avensis/accord if you want it to be a tad bigger. It'll be a bit older or have more mileage than a Focus/Astra of the same value but they are far superior in terms of build quality and reliability.

Please please please do not buy a fiat stilo! I have had loads over the months and not a single one has been fine. There is a reason they are so cheap...

There has been a lot of these threads lately. My advice would be buy Japanese with low mileage and decent history. they might look a bit rubbish and bland but they go forever. Or even an older German car, the Audi/Merc/Bmw of around 2000-2004 were shoddy unfortunately. Pre or post those years and your cooking with gas.
