The regulator rectifier I replaced as I thought that was the problem but they worked for about a day and then gave up the ghost. I have been using arm signals cos i cant figure out what the problem is but the mot is looming and I dont know what to do. The switch is ok and the rest of the electrics work fine. There is only one fuse and that did blow but i replaced it, that was due to a dodgy earth on my battery which just needed a screw tightening, any suggestions please? I am a single mum of 3 and its me only transport and i need to be able to get to the shops and back. Can i remove the indicators and pass a mot?? |
OK.... lets chill out a bit, slow down and work this through!
First off, if the bike was built AFTER 1985 then, no, you cant remove the indicators for MOT... wouldn't sort the problem anyway.... because 'the problem' is you waving your arms about doing chicken impressions rather then flipping a switch!
Now, HOW do they not work? Lets start at the beginning.
1/ Whats the bike? Make, model, year.
2/ you put the key in. You start engine. What happens? anything 'strange'?
3/ engine running, turn left indicator on... what happens?
Does anything light up?
Front left indicator, back left indicator, tell-tale light on the speedo?
Do you get a flash then nothing? Do you get nothing. do you get constant light, without it flashing?
HOW, 'don't' the indicators work?
Next, not sure why you'd replace the regulator for an indicator fault... is this relevent? Did you change it JUST because the indicators weren't working, or because you had a general electrical fault, like nothing worked!
When did the indicators stop working? You mention the battery earth and fuse. THAT little lot suggests general electrical fault, and regulator being replaced becouse nothing worked, and since fixing that, the indicator problem remaining.
Making a HECK of a lot of presumptions in there, makes me suspect that in de-bugging other faults you may have dislodged wire on indicator flasher, or shorted out the flasher unit, as that normally sits in close proximity to the battery, BUT, would be jumping to an awful lot of conclusions!
Electrics tend to be annoying, but end of the day they are a logical system, and taking time, and working through logically, identifying and isolating variables in turn, you get to the solution.
SO.... lets take a breath and work it through.
Fill in the blanks on the circumstances.
Explain the symptoms.
Then we can work it through.
Where are you? Do you have a wiring diagram? Do you have a Multi-Meter? ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Its a NRG piaggio dd. 2006 plate.

It starts up and the panel lights up with the milage and petrol info etc. Not anything strange, hooter works and starter but not the indicators, the high beam works ok too.

Nothing at all.
Front left indicator, back left indicator, tell-tale light on the speedo?

Nothing at all, I had it looked at a while ago and shelled out £40 for someone to look at it and tell me that the switch worked ok and there was power going thru the wires and couldnt see why it wouldnt work, the only thing he put it down to was the regulator rectifier he said replace that and it shud be fine. Went and bought one, fitted it, turned off the key on the lights worked but lasted about a few days and then stopped working after blowing a fuse. The starter and horn stopped and i had to start manually with kick start, it Kept blowing fuses and figured it to be a loose connection on the battery terminal. New fuse and the horn and starter worked and lights but no indicators again. Confused!!

The regulator/regtifier are one unit on this model and year so you have to replace as one unit.

Do Piaggios have the flasher relay built into the regulator, in a similar way to Derbi? ____________________ Current: Suzuki RG 125 Gamma, Honda H100, Triumph Tiger 800XC, Suzuki SV650 (minitwin) |
