Can anyone recommend me a NAS DNLA?

I have pretty much got the setup i want for in my house i am just looking to store all my photos/movies/music under the stairs instead of having them spread across different PC's/laptops.

I've looked and at the moment the Netgear ReadyNAS looks like a good option looking to see if anyone would recommend a solution.

Basically everything i was to store under the stairs and the house is all wired with cat 6 which all feeds to the cupboard under the stairs.

Can anyone recommend any decent ventilation methods apart from leaving the door open

As you can see below their is plenty of space on the bottom shelf for more gear but the general space is small so it gets a bit toasty in there.

The cupboard is on the other side of the TV, well not directly behind, there is ducting that runs diagonal down to the left where you can just see the subwoofer.

For cooling I can think of one solution. Change your Tv unit in the cupboard out for a wooden one or cut holes in the unit and replace it with a think metal mesh or similar.
Place a flat fan underneath or some laptop coolers that will blow air from underneath the system and out the top. Its a very simple copy of how server rooms are designed.

As for a NAS the Readynas got a good write up in T3 and is one of the cheaper ones to get, I would look at its 1080p potential if you are going down that route.

What player will you be using? Will it be the Ps3? In that case I guess you already have to transcode on the fly to a PS3 format?

A WDTV Live is a lifesaver and tiny and will play anything directly from a UPNP or DLNA source so no encoding required.

wish our place was cat6 up, would save me some money on the homeplugs we use.


Other idea is a cheap Pc or windows home server/windows xp/7, fill the beast up with drives and off you go. Windows home server is about £70 and a pc is as cheap as you can make it.

looking for a NAS myself with 2x 2TB HDDs installed, mainly for energy conservation and change in usage.

forgive my ignorance, but what difference does the player make, surely the NAS is just sharing the files so the player does all the hard work?

never had an issue streaming 1080p from my PC server, well down cat5e anyway, wireless was a bit poor

The player will be the decoder so my assumption was he is already transcoding at the moment.

If you were to put a nas into his setup then you could negate the transcoding by putting a player in that will play anything, which is what the WDTV does.

I mention 1080 content as its the most CPU intensive to transcode for a NAS and you may find that the NAS although it may be DLNA ready it may have issues with large files not being sent in the native format. Nowt more annoying than a stuttering movie as the nas buffer runs out and the cpu cant keep up.

meh DLNA is crap in my opinion it is a group of manufactures who have agreed a standard (mostly Divx) that they will make sure their tech will work with like Sony bravia tvs and Samsung.

A bit like the homeplug alliance only not as useful!

A nas drive without DLNA will work perfectly with the likes of a WDTV plus the WDTV will play anything thrown at it (almost) and has custom firmware thats even touted on the western digital official forums which is nice.

I wanted a low power solution so I relegated my HP netbook to the task of media/ftp server with attached USB drive.

My house is old so I've used a mix of homeplugs and wifi.

Cheap, cheerful, small and effective.

Thanks for the replies i was not sure if it had to be DNLA to work through my Denon AV.

Im starting to think perhaps just a mini pc hooked to the TV might be a better option, if i am going to be paying £200+ , im really looking for something i can expand on. I do some product photography for work, which im happy to store on my local machine but all my family photos, videos etc i want in one place as you just end up with copies of copies on different machines, i would then backup from one location to another.

However after looking at this Western Digital WDTV Live HD, i could add an external HD via USB to expand, do you know if an external drive connected would be shared on the network if i want to access from my PC?

I would recommend not getting a Netgear NAS unit - in my experience they are a complete PITA to use! For one thing, they have their own crazy filesystem that can only be recovered in the event of failure by buying the same kit that just failed. Also, you need to install software on every machine that accesses it

They may have improved in the 2 years since I bought one though!

I use QNAP units which are much nicer to work with, but a bit more pricey than Netgear.
