PostPosted: 23:01 - 25 Jan 2011    Post subject: Wiring a big ass AC motor up? Reply with quote

Hi folks,

I'm sure somebody on here will know what I'm talking about!

I've got this single phase 2.2kw 240v motor:

https://www.vmglimited.com/rich/motor2.jpg

It came wired up as pictured, and I connected a 13A plug as per my two photoshop'ed wires...

I was copying the diagram on the left of the lid (in the top of my photo).

Have I done something daft here as when I plug the thing in, it spins for a split second then the main fuse in my house blows...

The motor I have wired up with a thick cable directly to a plug which contains a 13A fuse. The name plate on the motor says it draws 13.5A but the 13A fuse does not blow. I tried inverting the L and N wires just in case (same result though).

Would appreciate any help!

Sounds like you need a controller to get it up to speed. The current flow at startup is limited only by the resistance of the wires, so the current flow will be huge and probably blow the house fuse. Once the rotor is spinning fully the back emf limits the current.

House plugs don't like the big surge from large motors.

It's probably because it's so new the start-up load is higher than it will be once it's run in. If you can wire it in somewhere where it will keep running for a while that might help your starting.

Also, motor-rated breakers are type D, if you have a type A or B in your consumer unite (which TBH you will have) they don't cope with motor starting loads as they trip out too fast.

Whats the rcd rating on your dis' board for your plug socket ringmain? This motor will draw more than 13a on start up.

Looks like a fault with your photoshopped wires, the terminals are not up to the job.

Is it blowing your RCD or an MCB in your consumer unit? If its the RCD you have a short to earth somewhere, if its the MCB its probably the start current being to high. MCBs that cover industrial equipment have different characteristics to domestic ones that allow for the high start currents.

You shouldn't be wiring it direct to the mains.
It needs a control box with a start and stop button.

I'm unconcerned which way it spins. I've wired it as per the pic on the left.

It's tripping the 30mA RCD....

Check the windings with a megger

Check the centrifugal switch is working.

Use a proper single phase direct on-line starter not a bloody plug, protected with a D type 15 Amp MCB with the minimum size cable conductor size of 1.5mm.

if after this it is still tripping the motor by have moisture within it or internal fault thats not the windings (how was it stored?).

I doubt it has a centrifugal switch.

WTF? or course it does?

Here, let me point out the bloody obvious.

The diagram on the right is for Anti-clockwise operation,

The diagram on the left is for Clockwise operation.

They would need to be wired differently.

Would it not be helpful to ensure the OP is connecting the motor correctly?

He's having a problem with the power, direction of the motor is irrelevant to power consumption. If you look at his picture you can see that he has wired it correctly according to the diagram.

You trollin' me brah?

Some AC Motors need capacitors to aid start-up and running, I think.

The original photo he posted showed 2 large capacitors wired into the motor. Guessing start and run capacitors, so as a previous poster said, probably has a centrifugal switch to change over.

How about buying a cheap lighting dimmer the sort thats normally used on your house lighting circuit, and using that to increase the current gradually ? That way the motor wont draw a huge current on startup.
