PostPosted: 08:08 - 23 Jan 2011    Post subject: applying for V5 from a frame Reply with quote

My zxr has been built ground up from a frame I aquired. It had no v5.

Its not stolen/lost - what do I need to do to get a V5 ? And is it difficult??

I'm a bit worried they may try back dating 2years of tax or sorn since its been a frame in my shed for that long with no V5 so no tax or sorn.

Thanks

All I can suggest is find another registered frame. There's a guy on OSS who has somehow managed to do it but since OSS has been down for some time now that's not a lot of help to you.

There isn't a way to find the reg number from just a frame number, not legally anyway

If you don't have the reg number you are going to have problems, essentially as this is a vehicle built up from parts it should have to go through either a BIVA or SVA. Details here - https://www.the-ace.org.uk/links-to-existing-legislation-svadvla.html

Try and get the details of the number plate from the frames previous owner, if you do get it just post off the form given on the link given previously with your frame number, engine number and reg and your V5 will arrive in the post.

If you dont it's SVA time, and at a cost of 85 pounds, and you will get a Q plate

Yeah it is a ball ache isnt it.

If you want to avoid a Q plate it might be easier to just buy a frame with V5 (I'm assuming its a 750, if so there's a frame with V5 on ebay for 65, nothing to do with me btw) and build your bike into this. I know it will be disheartening to have to do this but it will get you round the Q plate

Or you could buy a frame with V5 and restamp the headstock with the frame number on the V5. This is very naughty and is ringing but if done correctly is very hard to tell. I'm not advocating you do this just pointing it out.

Before anyone jumps down my throat about ringing, yes it is illegal and it is precisely what bike thieves do. But in this case it simply is a way to get around an essentially pointless test and being lumbered with a Q plate which will knock value off your bike

TL;DR - illegal but not immoral IMO

Presumably police have ability to obtain plate no from frame stamp? Would they rely on dvla database or run their own ?

What other agencies would have the facilities to obtain plate from frame stamp ? Insurance comps?

Regards

Not sure if the blokes still about but there was a bloke lingering around on visordown called yoda i think it is or yodi, and he does hpi checks think there about 15-20 pounds for a full check, and as far as i can remember he can do a check from just a frame number and come back with reg etc. worth a shot i say!

Thoughts, just had lots of thoughts.
I have a V5 for my old ZXR 750 (which for all intents is THIS zxr 750 just the frame has been changed due to the rebuild and old frame being cracked)

Can I just not remove the frame number, stick my old plate on it and use my V5 that corresponds to this? Apparently u don't need a Frame number for an MOT?

Regards

the offical HPI check company does HPI reporting using just the frame number.

I did this for my dad for a Merc that had a plate change and was on finance. Despite this I got the details of both the private plate and the orignal plate number.

Best way forward. It does cost unfortunately about 25 - 30 quids!

That previous thread is so old I think its safe to assume things have tightened up? I have just bought a frame with clear numbers but no v5c, is there any point in me trying the V62?

Drop this guy an email https://www.bikechatforums.com/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=63826
He did one for me from just the frame number, had the check back in less than ten minutes. You will be better off emailing him as he took a while to reply through bcf
