I once broke the speed limit, back in 2008, and as a result got points and a fine.

My insurance is now up for renewal and I was wondering if I should still declare that I have points or not?

I have heard somewhere that you have them for 2 years and also other people say you have them for 3 years ? But which is it ? Or is it even longer ?

They are printed on my green paper licence part but it doesn't say anywhere on the licence when they are removed.

And when they are 'removed' do you just send the paper licence part back and they send you a clean bit of paper back (with the points not printed on it) ?

Cheers in advance....

Thumbs Up

they last for 3 years, they stay on your licence for 4 years, and usually insurance want to know if you have had any in the last five years

Hi

They stay on your license for 4 years but are only active for 3 (for accumulated points leading to a ban). Insurance companies want to know about them for 5 years normally though.

All the best

I think it's 3 years on your license, can go after 4? but you may need to declare for 5? It's really confusing, sorry I can't help too much!

Also, i think you have to pay to get them removed, however there is a loop hole that i used and it works a treat, if you change your address they will automatically get removed, and an address change if free, then give it a few weeks and change the address again, and you will have a clean licence

When you change address, pay the extra and say you've lost your licence. The DVLA are great at losing entitlements off licenses, and denying all knowledge of you ever having them.

This.

Take photos of your photocard, and selected parts of your counterpart before you send it off in case some bits do go missing.

They wont accept photos, or even photocopies.

apply for a new licence due to address change & keep hold of the original, that way you have proof of entitlements.

True, but probably more for their own convenience rather than for any good reason. Easier to tell you to sod off than admit to, and correct their own mistakes.

They would be unable to refuse to accept a certified copy (which is an easy thing to obtain). Given that it is good enough for most legal situations.

I wouldn't send them the last certified copy of anything though, as they will just lose/shred that and again deny all knowledge.

Go to a bank/solicitor, get several certified copies.

I just applied for a lost/stolen replacement, means I now have a spare photocard and counterpart with my truck licences on, would like to see them refuse to accept that their own card is proof of having held categories if they 'lose' them one day. I wouldn't send it off, i'd go to the DVLA office to verify it in person.

As for the original post, insurance quotes are fairly self explanatory, they ask you what you've done and give you a timeframe.
