until the govenment has its wicked way and either taxes it to high heaven, or makes it illegal like red diesel.

Hasn't this been explored before by Hollywood? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chain_Reaction_%28film%29

Hopefully Cella Energy won't erupt in a ball of flames when the oil conglomerates realise how badly this screws their deal up...

I'm usually quite dubious of such clean fuels, however tbf if the claim that hydrogen based fuels containing 3x more energy per unit weight holds any truth..
Or more to the point if that means that my engine would perform just as well on this stuff if not better then I'd be all for it.
Government would be leaching C U Next Tuesdays on this though.
*If this really is the all singing, all dancing potential fuel of the the future then I doubt we'd see it,
As the robbing bastards would probably figure that they aren't able to extort us enough for it.

They'll just tax it until it's virtually the same price as other fuels.

Wonder if the inventor will meet a similar fate to that of Rudolph Diesel.

For those of you who dont know and can;t be arsed to google it.

"In the evening of 29 September 1913, Diesel boarded the post office steamer Dresden in Antwerp on his way to a meeting of the Consolidated Diesel Manufacturing company in London. He took dinner on board the ship and then retired to his cabin at about 10 p.m., leaving word for him to be called the next morning at 6:15 a.m.. He was never seen alive again. Ten days later, the crew of the Dutch boat Coertsen came upon the corpse of a man floating in the sea. The body was in such an advanced state of decomposition that they did not bring it aboard. Instead, the crew retrieved personal items (pill case, wallet, pocket knife, eyeglass case) from the clothing of the dead man, and returned the body to the sea. On 13 October these items were identified by Rudolf's son, Eugen Diesel, as belonging to his father.

There are various theories to explain Diesel's death. Grosser (1978)[3] presents a case for suicide; other theories suggest that various people's business interests may have provided motives for homicide.[4] Evidence is limited for all explanations."

You iz a conspiracy theorist. Razz
Easier just to buy the company out with an offer they cant refuse. The idea can then just disappear as "not viable" if it is a real threat to any vested interest.

Hydrogen is just a storage mechanism for energy. The peak oilers argue that it takes more energy in to produce than you get out from using it.

Either way there will be government control based on "saving the planet". Gotta keep the peasants down somehow.

I wonder if it will require an engine conversion like LPG? As that is a rather expensive conversion to make.

Methinks petrol is about 35p-40p a litre to produce/retail etc. The rest is all tax.

Therefore 19p + tax (obviously they'll slowly add it on over time as the tech is more widely used) is going to be nearly as expensive. Whatever bollocks they spout about carbon emissions and petrol now, i expect that this will not cost anywhere near as little as 19p a litre once its use becomes widespread.

Edit: Yeah, just read the article - 60p a litre. And lol the AA already beat me: "AA president Edmund King commented: 'The fact the hydrogen is cheaper now doesn't mean it always will be because the Government would soon get its hands on it and increase the tax.'"

Ah but does it use any oil at all?

I mean, if we run out of oil, will we saved by this hydrogen based stuff?

It sounds like wishful thinking to me.

I intend to make a car in my back yard that gets 80mpg and does 0-60 in 2.5 seconds. Why don't you believe me ?

Ben Elton's gridlock becomes reality when a scientist from cella energy in oxfordshire suddenly explodes for no reason taking with him all evidence of "cheap" fuel.

Even electric vehicles use oil. It's in the tyres, the plastics, lubricants and the road surface you travel on. And that's assuming the electric you're using is for free, when it's likely from a gas powered power station. And we wont run out, it's just how much energy you have to expend to get the stuff out the ground. At some point it doesn't become economic to do so.

There are Russian scientists who argue oil is abiotic and replenishes naturally. If so it's a case of whether this can meet the demand for cheap plastic tat from China as well as a means of transport and everything else.

The article I read about this said that it could be used in current engines with no modifactions or alterations.

the chip fat thing isn't illegal unless you use over 2500 miles worth or something stupid, which basically means you can get caught but its a bit hard to prove.

they said this with unleaded but it burns at a higher temperature and burns valves out on older engines

Of course it does, you can't manufacture anything with 100% efficiency.

At the moment most hydrogen is made by burning fossil fuels to make electricity to hydrolyse water into hydrogen (and oxygen). As it stands at the moment, it's a fraud.

Not necessarily. Biggest difference was that UK leaded petrol landed up as 97 RON 4*, compared to 95 RON unleaded meaning timing needed to be adjusted on many cars. And the issue with valves was due to the lack of lead in the fuel, as the lead residue in the oil protected the valve seats.

All the best

You can produce 2,500 litres of fuel per year without having to pay fuel duty. Making biodiesel from used cooking oil is producing your own fuel and using vegetable oil straight off the supermarket shelf also counts as producing your own fuel.

Paying with cash (veggy oil and pump diesel when you buy it) and buying from different places would make it quite hard to prove you've made more than 2,500 litres in a year.
