hello...

recentlty aquired a CBR900 '97 Model..

Basically 2nd gear is a biatch, and sometimes will pop out if its not nursed in, however theres a strange rattle that stops when you pull the clutch in,

any ideas ? I bought it as a bike wityh issues and im sorting most of them out,

all CBR's have a rattly clutch, i'd personally say the 2nd gear problem is either the clutch isn't adjusted properly, or the 2nd gear dogs are worn, my old CBR600 was exactly the same.

dont chat crap my 98 cbr900 has no clutch rattle my 94 cbr600 had no clutch rattle my 93 cbr900 had no clutch rattle
clutch rattle isnt a common problem with the cbr range cam chain tensioners and cam chain rattle is a common problem with the cbr range

i was going for the latter on this at first but ive just been ona ten mile ride, and the more i try to use 2nd the more its staying in, but with the noise stopping when the clutch is pulled, and by loosening off the clutch a little the noise has quietened..

best thing about it is that the rear tyre is sooo squared-off that you have to chuck it into any corner.. new tyre tomorrow i think, but reluctant to pay out 110 quid if its fecked Smile

apparently the clutch basket gets very worn, so if thats bad the springs might be bad and might not be working as well as it should ??

Worth a punt, best get some oil and drain it Smile

Plenty do have a clutch basket rattle though that goes when you pull the clutch in be it cable or hydraulic. Seen and heard of loads of 600, Blade and Blackbird , never seems to get any worse or cause any noticeable wear or damage to those that have it.

My '01 CBR6 has a bit of a noisy clutch basket, many of the CBR600s I've encountered do too.

sadly it is quite common for most hondas to have clutch rattle.(seen hundreds) it isn't normally dangerous never heard of one failing anyway.it is the clutch thrust bearing a very small plain bearing that carries a lot of pressure.as to the secound gear you'll prob find one of the owners before you pulled alot of wheelies and secound gear is favourite and takes hammering when changing up from first to secound it is quite common for R1's to loose secound gear so be very nice to it when changing up into secound as booting it in will lead to it's destruction .also it isn't as scary a job as it sounds if you can find an unworn gear set secound hand
