Anyone done Ju Jitsu? Thinking of giving it a go this week. Had a close call with some pissed up theiving smack head scum bags in the park, it was an eye opener. My fighting 'skills' involve getting in first and hoping for the best... that wouldn't have cut it if the situation played out differently.

Looks good for the type of situations you might find yourself in on the street. ____________________ BCF's 6th favourite poster 2009-2010

Yawn, more stage-managed 'MA' BS where the opponent makes BS moves so the 'master' can do him in.
Save your time and money Harold and just carry a telescopic baton. Or if you're worried about legality a long Maglite in a belt-loop. ____________________ "There's the horizon! Ride hard, ride fast and cut down all who stand in your way!" |

Allowing yourself to go to ground in a street fight is a total mistake.
The absolute best thing you can do for self defence, to get you up to speed quickly, is to do boxing. Combine that with closed fist conditioning (so you don't weaken your hands using gloves) and you'll be able to hit and get hit harder than anyone.
The only way to learn to fight, is to really fight. Ju Jitsu works in MMA, but I'm not convinced it works against multiple smackheads with shanks and that. The secret to winning a street fight is to not let it last longer than three seconds. In those three seconds you've got to take the opponent out. The only way to do that effectively is to hit him fucking hard as many times as you can so he doesn't get back up. Kicking can be OK but you need to practice and only lift your feet up when you KNOW that it can't be used to compromise your balance... which in practise is almost never.
The other option to hitting hard is of course hitting someone a lot... but I reckon you need a bit of both.

If you've never heard of it look of Krav Maga. It's what the isreali special forces use. Most of the videos will be of the really elaborate fancy stuff, but generally its quite practical. It's designed to help protect VP's so it's designed for fighting off multiple people quickly with a couple of nasty strikes to the face, or slamming them into the ground / wall |

My 10 year old knocked me out for about 4 seconds once
Cracking right hook it was.... elbow up ... little rotation of the waist.
According to Mrs. Silky who saw it all... I didnt see it (was watching tv), hence it caught me off guard.
If she hadnt sucker punched me then I would had taken her. ____________________ There's nothing that shouts "Poor Workmanship" more than wrinkles in the Gaffa tape.

It's not exactly learning to take the hit, its more like accustomising yourself with it. Knowing how it's going to affect you, and preparing yourself for it.
If you're used to taking a few knocks, you've no fear of it hurting 'cos you already know what's coming. Whereas if you fear it coming, it always hurts more. It's like training yourself to be in the right mindset.
You'll also teach yourself to block out the pain, and focus more on returning a punch, or avoiding another one. The pain is only temporary, and it's a distraction when you're in a scuffle.
You can also be taught on how to take a punch if it's completely unavoidable. If you can't step out of it, or even duck, you should be taught to lower your chin to stop your jaw swinging around and protect your throat.
Alot more can be learned and taught than you think. |

Riding a punch is entirely another matter. How many blows would you have to take to the skull to condition it, and would you get a sufficiency of them to do the job before suffering brain-damage? And how much area would be conditioned by one punch? Load of codswallop.
You either have a head for it or you don't. And even if you do, don't get hit on it anyway, brain-damage is just one unlucky blow away. ____________________ "There's the horizon! Ride hard, ride fast and cut down all who stand in your way!" |

I think you've never been in a fight, because everything you've just said sounds like it's come right out of a martial-arts manual or comic. We're talking about real fighting here I assume, not sports or anything else that's managed?
Yes, a clear head can be kept in a fight, up until the point it proves that the other bloke isn't a push-over and can hurt you back, then it's a different kettle of fish. Stop to think too long then and you're done.
Go in https://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr356/Langnasen7/fcuking.jpg hard and fast and pray you don't take a humdinger before you can give the other chap one. And if you don't and you start to run out of puff, grab him, take him down and snap him.
If there's more than one of them, lamp the one with the biggest mouth and then run like a mofo. ____________________ "There's the horizon! Ride hard, ride fast and cut down all who stand in your way!" |

If you decide to take up a Martial Art, I would say the most important thing is to spar as often as you can. EDIT: By sparring I mean doing a fight, but not quite as intensive as a real life one
I did Karate for ages, and got 1 belt of black, but I simply got so bored of going up and down in a line to get the grades. That wasn't what I was interested in and wasn't what I was there for. I went to learn to protect myself, and for that you need to train yourself in practical situations, where you can see a punch coming towards you. If you didn't block it you got hit.. simples.
I would quite happily go along to a self defence class once a week to learn some moves (which are becoming increasing more important these days), if I was guaranteed to actually do, and practise the moves on other people.
I would say probably about 70% of a fight is mental if not more. If you can prepare yourself mentally then you have a good chance of winning.
As people have said above, its also about the person that gets the first punch in, and if its not you being able to block it and counter attack is an absolute must. Learning to take hits as Marjay said is important to. Ideally though, you don't want to get hit at all.
One of my favourite moves in Karate was the Sam-Bon-Zuki (no idea if that's actually how its spelt, but its how you say it!). It was where you did 3 consecutive punches. Head, chest, chest. The aim was to knock out your opponent with the first and wind/break ribs with the other 2, leaving them unable to continue. After this, you deal with their mate, or you run away as quickly as possible.
Some of the moves we learnt would put people in a wheel chair for a while. Not sure I would really want to use them in any situation, but if it was my life of theirs I would not hesitate.
One last thing... The best thing I got from my martial arts was the confidence. Before I was bullied a lot etc, but the Karate gave me the confidence to stand up to them as I simply was no longer afraid. As I said above a lot of the fight is mental, so with that confidence it really helps!
Hope thats been informative and I haven't just rabbled on! |
