Infrared thermometers

Thinking of getting an infrared pistol style thermometer. As it would be useful for lots of reasons.

But has anybody tried these eBay ones?

Dont know what brand it was, but i used to use one when i worked in a kitchen. Was the cheapest nastyist one around, and it worked fine for the 3 years i used / abused it. It got dropped fuck knows how many times, thrown and dropped, dropped in food, soup etc etc.
Eventually i 'borrowed' it to monitor an air cooled engine to check it werent getting too 'ot. Then i fell out my pocket at 60 and exploded on impact :/

That's the same one that I've got and its really useful to have around.

I used mine to check the balance of the carbs on the Monster by checking the heat of each exhaust downpipe (I do have a carb balancer, which I used afterwards but this thing has fricken lazer beams & is infinitely more fun!)

Use them on Gas Turbines, excellent piece of kit, but not used that particular brand.

I have bought one of those from your link. It seems to work very well indeed. I measured the temperature of stuff and the wife spent the evening winding up the cat with the laser pointer.

My old man has one in his Pub kitchen, seems to work well and has been dropped/soaked in stuff loads of times and still functions.

The dog came in at about 32C through the fur which would seem pretty accurate.
