Well that is all pretty standard stuff over here in Cyprus, happens at every set of lights.

Here's a tip for anyone visiting Cyprus, as a pedestrian be very, very careful using a pelican crossing these are totally ignored all the time, no one and I mean no one stops for these! Rolling Eyes

Undertaking on the hard shoulder is also a common practice here!

I found a great way of avoiding the commuting idiots of Dublin - I live somewhere else (though sadly Medway has more than its fair share of gobshites, particularly of the van driving, red light jumping variety).

Haha the song is so suitable.

Seems like a pretty crappy place to ride a bike/drive a car/walk tbh.

Belfast is just as bad. Seems to be an Irish thing, terrible driving.

Grandad went to Dublin regularly and one time we were all there with him as he was driving down a street and some bloke pulled in the other end. There wasnt any room to pass, it was a single lane with cars parked on both sides. Bloke got out of the car and started demanding Grandad reversed. Grandad said no and the argument went on until the other driver decided to threaten to call the police to sort it out. Grandads reply is stuck in my head forever. He said "You call the police son, but before you do have a look at which direction all these parked cars are facing and go back to that big sign at the end of the road where you pulled in and see what it says on there."

Dude had pulled into a 1 way street the wrong way. He got into his car and reversed without saying another word.

Whilst i don't know the law there, i can only assume it is like many other countries in Europe, where they are merely 'designated crossing points' and not a place where the pedestrian effectively has right of way over the traffic.

Many European countries have 'Jaywalking' laws in place, and it is 'the law' that these crossings must be used. However, these laws are generally ignored by many/most Yurrup-ians (wiz ze exception of ze Germans, yaaaaahh).

In France, you get really puzzled looks from the pedestrians if you stop at one of the crossings, they really aren't expecting it.

That's not the case at all from my experiences in France.

Strange, i've been visiting our garlic-crunching surrender-philic chums on (at least) an annual basis for over 20 years, and it's something i've always noted and been amused by.

We are talking about the same thing? Pedestrian (Zebra) crossings not controlled by traffic lights?

I believe French law is that pedestrians only have priority when they are on the crossing, not waiting to cross.

Unless the road is clear behind, i don't bother stopping anymore - i had so many near-rears from French drivers who were just not expecting me to stop.

Thumbs Up

Watching that video definately proves why filming rides is now becoming the norm, so many near misses! And dozy pedestrians.

I didnt think it was that bad. He needs to start using his horn to alert people to his presence, and to express his annoyance.

Defensive riding is sensible, but if you ride aggressively, most of the time people wont pull that kind of stuff as long as they know you are there.

If you always give way to people who ignore your right of way, you either need to get used to it, or change to not give way, and hope there arent any collisions.

I thought that was fairly normal fare for any major city, I mean it even looked like some of the stuff I see in Gloucester (small provincial city that it is).

The only thing I don't get is the "advisory" red lights, is that correct? I know in some countries you can turn right (for those that drive on the right) on red, which is a good idea.

But, imho anyone who rides a Yamaha Majesty deserves everything they get, and if it wasn't quite so under powered (unlike a proper bike) he could have nipped past the car wanting to park on the right in the one way street... Wink

I've spent a fair amount of time in dublin. It's an awesome city, but like any capitol/major city, it has traffic issues. The whole place is near enough a car park through rush hour. One of the main problems with ROI is that they never used to enforce provisional licence holder rules about having a tutor with you. My dads ex (she's dublin born and bred) only had a provisional and had been driving solo for nearly 20years. Consequently, they don't really know how to behave on the roads. Apparently this is changing now, but I'm yet to notice a difference.

I found that if you relax a little, have excellent obs, you can spot the accidents before they happen and avoid it. Pedestrians only really cause a problem the closer to dublin centre you go.

Overall I wouldn't say it's that much worse than any other city I've been to, with the possible exception of traffic light behaviour... As shown quite clearly in that video they really take the biscuit. I was running a little late for my ferry home once and I made it from my dads pad to the ferry port in less than ten minutes through rush hour. Clicky. As you can see it's fairy close to the centre. I was filtering like a demon and showing no regard for speed limits. At no point did I feel like I was in any danger. If I spent 2 months filming the antics of road behaviour in norwich, I'd be able to fill 10 3 minute videos!

Overall... Go to Dublin! It ace (I'm going on the 19th of this month!)

Been going for most years since i was about 10 (albeit not driving, so only recently took note of it)

Especially last summer every zebra crossing the drivers seemed to stop for people waiting, I specifically noted it because I was shocked at it Laughing

Law changed or just polite Frenchies this year? (Well, 2010) Laughing

Based upon my continual observations of their national character, i'd go with law change.

In that situation, I would have parked my bike up in the space, blasted my horn so they knew I was there and told them to find a new space, then once they'd left, carried on my merry way Laughing
