Hi

I am borrowing a cagiva 125 planet, just passed my test and needed something to get me on the road. The headlamp flash stuck on and fried the wiring loom so i had to renew a lot of the wires, got it retty much fixed but the headlights arent working properly yet

Symptoms are;
wiring loom melted but i replaced all the fried wires (that i could find) and thats got it running
Ignition key was dodgey but again I think iv fixed it
Lights not working properly, sidelights DONT come on at side light position but DO come on at next click (i.e. dipped headlights) but headlight doesnt come on at this click (when it should)

Any ideas as to what the cause might be? they were working fine before and i can get power directly to it and the bulbs work fine....someone said it might be the relay....but i dont know how to check this or even where it is!!

Any help would be great!

Cheers

Rob

Yeah, havent changed anything since before the wiring loom got fried and it was fine then so it must be something to do with that. Might try replacing the relay if i can find it! bit of an amateur at all this as it's my first bike!!

Sounds to me like you've got the wires in the wrong connections...

Indicators work?

Is it just the headlight you're having a problem with?

IMO, a headlight staying on should NOT melt a wiring loom...

I dont think i can have the wires in the wrong connections, as i said I havent changed anything since before the problem and they were working fine then... i cant imagine they could have melted and re-fused in another position could they? all the wires around the switches etc looks unaffected.

Yep everything else working, and have checked the bulb as I can get power directly to it and it works fine. Might just have to go over it again and look for any more fried wires.

Yeah i didnt think holding flash on would really be an issue either but I've spoken to a few people who think it is and cant find any other reason for the issue.

Any ideas if the relay would be a problem and if so how to find and check it?

Wires can melt together causing a short fairly easily. Breaking a connection is probably less likely though (although burning the contacts in a switch might stop them making contact).

It does mean an extra 4~5 amps going through various wires which can cause a problem.

Not sure the Planet uses a relay for the lights. Most smaller bikes just wire things directly.

All the best

Keith

Thanks for your help, Im just going to have to get into the guts of it and find the problem, it must be a melted wire/dodgey connection that I have missed.

Thanks

Robbie
