				| Hey guys,
Was on my way home yesterday and I was litterally confused about this biker. He was on a bike similar to this:
 https://bikesource.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/honda-swing.jpg

He had the 'L-Plates' on but he was carrying a Pillion on the back of his bike. I thought and just assumed that when you are on 'L-Plates'; you cannot carry a passenger?.

So was he in the right or in the wrong?.

 Cheers.

 He was in the wrong:

He either had a full licence, in which case he can take a pillion but shouldn't be riding with L plates...

 OR

He had a provisional licence, in which case he should be riding with L plates but cannot take a pillion.

				| I'm pretty sure that you DON'T have to take L plates off if you've got a full licence. I did used to think this was the case, but I believe someone on here may well have corrected me and a little research I believe showed that this was the case.
From first result in google - https://www.policespecials.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=69119 .

Because thats what the law states?
My dad is insured on the CG, but as he has a full test he takes the L plates off. Probably more out of embarrassment than any legal reasons though lol
 |
Where does the law state that? It doesn't state that, from what I can gather.
A lot of people hold the mistaken belief it does - including me in the past.

If a copper moans about it I'll tell him to pull every single driving school car.

Well, I checked this in the RTA probably five years ago, and it DID have clauses in there at that time.
Clauses about Learners having to weat them, and averything were in there.
As far as full licence holders, there was clause about them not displaying L's that implied that it was illegal, though there may have been a grey area in wording and it said 'should not' rather than 'Must Not' or something.
However it did provide quite clear 'exemption' for driving istructors in training cars, and from memory, it was OK for them to drive the car displaying L's 'during the course of their business' as a driving instructor, so between apointments or taking over from an overwrought student, but it was wuite clear that they should obscure or remove BOTH driving school banners as well as 'L-Plates' if used for 'private use'.
It may have changed, but for rider training, we 'inturpreted' the clause to apply to bikes, if we had to ride a bike to the petrol station or two-up a rider to CBT.
Have to admit I take Snowies 125 out with the L's still on quite often, without taping over them.....
amazing how, considering drivers dont tend to see bikes at ALL, presence of an L-Plate makes them behave differently, and make them FAR more likely to pull out of side turns and stuff on you, than give you a bit of extra road room!

				| It is law that if you have a Full Motorcycle Licence entitlement (or full 50cc moped entitlement through having a driving licence prior to February 2001), the 'L' plates have to be removed or covered - there are NO EXCEPETIONS.

				| Vehicles. Any vehicle driven by a learner MUST display red L plates. In Wales, either red D plates, red L plates, or both, can be used. Plates MUST conform to legal specifications and MUST be clearly visible to others from in front of the vehicle and from behind. Plates should be removed or covered when not being driven by a learner (except on driving school vehicles).

				| If it is really important for you - I will contact our local traffic policeman for clarification in the matter - presumably you have some burning need or desire ?
Certainly - as far as the DSA are concerned - it is a requirement and they are quick to point this out to anybody attending a test centre who has a full licence - riding a motorcycle with 'L' plates on
