The Aprilia Mana

https://astonishingbikes.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/apriliamana450x404.jpg

and the Honda DN-01

Personally I could see myself with either, having driven automatic cars for so long. The idea of a motorbike with a scooter twist and go option is very tempting.

Hi

For me playing tunes on the gearbox (and getting it right, or getting annoyed with myself for getting it wrong) is a major part of the fun of riding a bike (and driving a car). Compared to this, to me ultimate speed and acceleration are far less important.

This is why I want something with good throttle response, a good clutch and good gear change. And why I don't want an automatic, or a manual which doesn't respond well (ie, our X type manual has a pretty poor gear change - feels like the car has a half ton flywheel which takes ages to slow down contributing to a very ponderous feeling gear change).

All the best

Keith

I'd be interested, but only on certain types of bike. A cruiser, tourer, commuter or city bike would potentially be good with an automatic. Some bikes can give you a sore left hand due to constant clutch use when riding in town in which case an automatic would be ideal. Riding hundreds of miles per day would also be good to have an auto for.
Most people ride bikes for fun however, part of this is being in control, an auto takes away some of that control. So i don't think you'll ever find anybody buying and auto for fun.

Sleek as it looks, I believe the Honda has a pitiful 40ish bhp motor. I'd want more than that if I was losing control of my gearshifts.

GSXR1000 + centrifugal clutch.
Leave it in second gear and top speed is probably a little higher than the Honda.

And yea, the new Honda 1200 is a 'semi auto' I believe - like lots of modern sports cars have with 'paddles'.

I am sure that if most bikes had a twist and go version, more people would get into biking.

Maybe, but by how many sales and at what cost? The Japanese makers don't even bother with easy things to boost their UK sales such as importing models sold elsewhere, or even just colour schemes sold elsewhere on models that are sold in the UK.

An automatic setup is a non trivial change, and I doubt the sales would be that large. Maybe enough to justify the odd model.

All the best

The VFR has a dual clutch. Can be ridden in automatic mode or manual but in manual you change gear by pressing a button on the handlebar. There's no clutch lever or gear shifter.

I've ridden the fully manual VFR and it's a very nice ride.

I got a Gilera DNA125 for the G/F s few years ago and it was fun. Possibly due to coming from a Vmax etc and finding the DNA a giggle Thumbs Up Might be odd to be on a bigger bike ..but it was fun on a 125 Thumbs Up

Maybe not an automatic version of all bikes, but at least more than the present two?

personally i find timing gear changes and having the freedom to do so a huge part of riding a bike, so i see automatic bikes as a bit of a waste to be honest.

down at west bay theres a guy who always turns up on that automatic honda and it is honestly one of the ugliest bikes i have ever seen, he looks ridiculous on it

I think DN01's look fantastic. They need a goldwing engine in them though.

The evidence would suggest otherwise.

Honda have been faffing around with automatics, of one kind or another, since the 60s and none of them have ever sold in big numbers, most of them didn't stay in production for more than a couple of years.

Probably because I don't read the motorcycling press, I thought that Honda was a new bike, because I've never seen one before; I thought it looked good, so I did some digging and discovered they stopped selling it here last year, after only two years on the pricelist.

There's two on ebay, both at the same dealer; one has delivery mileage only at £4K under list and the other has done less than 7K and lost half it's value, which suggests they're about as popular as a ham sandwich at a bar mitzvah.

I can remember having a go on a CB400 Hondamatic (clutchless 2 speed manual) and it was beyond grim.

Having said that, I quite like the idea of a switchable push button box, but only if they can make them perform really well in manual mode, like they don't in most cars.

the honda is horrible, its really long, and tiny, like sitting on your sofa its so low. the front of it looks stupid, dont understand the point in a automatic bike Confused defeats the point completely, save a fortune and buy a moped Laughing

To ride an automatic bike you'd have to pass your test on a manual as well, so that's probably a factor Thinking

There's actually a few options now - some quite swish ones to give paddles for kit cars, etc.

No you don't. You could pass your test on a 125cc scooter, but you'll be restricted to automatics.

When I was doing my training, there was a guy there doing his test on a Piaggio MP3.
