Now, I'm guessing it's a fair bet that quite a lot of BCF members will be reasonably enthusiastic watchers of road racing and quite a few will be off road fans, but are there any speedway supporters out there?

i can't stand watching motogp etc
street racing like iom and nw200 is better
and moto-x gives me the shits, enduro racing like the lastman standing or some of the other big tevevised events are pretty good,

basically anything that is raced on a track that has more than 1 lap is just gay.. imho,

so going round in circles on a speedway bike is the worst thing i could possibly think of

its like nascar of the bike world

I can't quite see the comparison, but it's an interesting perspective.

NASCAR involves brakes, gears and travelling at high speed, for hours, without getting sideways; speedway involves no brakes, no gears and travelling at high speed for around 60 seconds, while getting as sideways as possible.

That seems pretty different to me.

Much as I love every motorbicycling bro and ho, speedway has always struck me as "400 quatloos on the newcomer" stuff.

I've been to see speedway once when I was about 8, I remember it being excellent. But I was 8.

One of my friends (and his family) is a huge fan of speedway, knows all of the riders and teams etc.... None of them have ever ridden as far as I'm aware so I have no idea where their love of the sport came from.

i think the guys have skills, there is no doubt, but they are just going around in circles, ok its on a dirt track, but moto-x is far more exciting, and i still find that boring because they are just going round a track,

enduro racing is where its at,

Round ad round they go, when they'll stop nobody knows! Oh right it's stopped and that guy seems to have won.

I've been a few times but never really found it great. It's just 4 dirt bikes lapping a small oval, it's basically backyard dirtbike nascar Laughing

Not a 'supporter' of anything, but if Speedway's on, I'll watch it.
Want to have a play at it some time, but it's harder than most things to just 'have a go'.

I think speedway is actually a fairly tactical form of racing, often the most simple forms of racing are. Where as in rallying/enduro racers rely on quick judgment, skill and a certain amount of luck, often in more predictable forms of racing that alone won't be enough to win so different tactics and strategies have to be used.

I went to the same school as the speedway rider Tommy Allen ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1l1KKSR3jY ), although I've never actually met him. Also Casey Stoner used to be my brothers friends Dads work mates pen pals sons managers uncles paperboy Laughing But thats enough about my racing contacts.

I don't follow speedway, mainly because its normally on sky which I don't have and also because I already follow about 7-8 other motorsport championships.

I've been to watch it a few times in Birmingham and Coventry. I don't go regulary, but i thought it was good fun, and very close and agressive too. I'd say it's more like professional Hockey than Nascar though!

I wouldn't turn down the chance to go and watch some speedway racing if i know someone is going or for a day out etc. Like G says id give it a bash too, but i don't think it's a riding style that would come easily even to serious off road bikers, it's that different to everything else on two wheels!

I wouldn't watch it on the TV, but I'd go and have a watch as the local speedway track is only 6 miles away.

I'm more of a Dakar and TT man though.

There are a few tracks that do training days and will hire you bikes, if you're in the Midlands/North, Stoke or Scunthorpe might be worth checking out.

You're right though, it's a completely counter intuitive style of riding, cracking open the throttle as you turn in just doesn't feel right.

The best way to get your head round what's going on, is to go to the pre season press and practice day, when you can see riders turning laps on their own.

The season starts next month, so I guess most tracks have their P&P days in early March.

To be fair, I expect 'serious' motocross/enduro riders would get the idea pretty quickly. More serious than me, anyway - but even on an enduro bike I can get a bit of a controlled slide going ok, though generally not actually sustaining it for a long period of time intentionally unless the conditions are ideal (like the snowy car park a year ago where I was happily trundling around on full lock at 5mph for ages Smile ).

I talked to someone that used to post on here about it a few years ago and he gave me a few suggestions for places that do such 'trial days', but yea, not many.
