Information on Moped

Hello,

I'm not sure if this is the right place but I'd like some information regarding a moped.

I'm interested in getting one just to get me to work and back (Its about 15 minutes away) I only want a cheap one but I wondered what I needed to do. Do I need to take a test? I have a provisional and Car insurance if that helps. I'd like to take the easiest and quickest route if possible.

Any information would be great.

Minimum you will need is to take you CBT, Compulsory basic training. It takes most of a day and costs around £100.

You then need to buy a scooter which will need to be insured, taxed and, if its more than three years old it will need an MOT.

On top of this you will need safety gear. The only compulsory part is a crash helmet. Best advise is to get some gloves and a decent jack along with some good waterproof textile trousers. Footwear is your choice but something sturdy that will protect your ankles is a good start.

If you have only a provisional license then you'll need to do a CBT before you are allowed on the roads on any scooter or motorbike.

You'll also need separate insurance for your scooter if you do proceed to buy one. And you will need to make sure your provisional license has the Motorbike entitlement.

The cost for the CBT is around £100 and you can google a training school in your area. It lasts 2 years and you have to do it again. Or get your full motorbike test within that time.

Finds out they don't need a full licence to do that, so do CBT and wobble about on L-plates for a couple of years, until they realise the certs about to expire, and then either give up, or as often as not repeat the CBT.
Bottom line is CBT is around £75, and you have to do it every two years. A motorcycle licence is for life!
And bikes are the most dangerouse form of motorised transport, and just becouse a moped is only good for 30mph dont mean they are any safer. I many ways they are bludy horendouse due to lack of speed, lack of weight and dire instability!
You wouldn't expect to be able to just jump in a car and drive, on L-Plates unsupervised, why JUST because its legal to do so on a lightweight motorcycle do you think its a good idea on a bike?

Advice, check out training schemes and by all means do your CBT, but think hard on the merits of training up for a full licence.

You can still ride a moped, and its still just as cheap, but as a properly trained and properly qualified rider, you will be safer, and it will open the door to ANY other motorcycle for you, from a 50cc twist and go scooter, right up to a fully dressed heavyweight Harley or Gold-wing and all points in between.

Meanwhile, getting trained and tested, will give you a head start, becouse you'll only have to do it all in two years anyway when your CBT is about to expire, or waste money repeating your CBT over and over... and with changes coming, getting any licence in two years time is going to be a heap harder and more expensive... so worth getting it out the way, straight away for that as well as getting off to a good start from the beginning, making yourself a safe competent qualified rider, rather than learning the hard way, wobbling about hoping you dont fuck it up too bad, or that it dont hurt too much if you do!

Instead of scooter have a loook at some 125cc bikes, preferably not chinese... Names like Honda or Yamaha you will most probably find a geared bike is more fun and if your qualified to ride it on a CBT why not!

Ok, thanks everyone for taking the time to reply. All information is appreciated.

I think i'm just going to stick to learning to drive. I already have a car, taxed and insured, I just can't drive. Its so scary and I get so nervous!

I must admit I never struggle with the way Mike spells in his posts. I can generally read through the bad spelling for the most part. What I do sometimes stuggle with is the length but having learnt he's lysdexic then fair play to him for taking the time to write such lengthy posts. The few dyslexic sufferers I have known in my life try their best to avoid writing as much as possible. The fact Mike can sit there with his tongue out typing huge long posts is a credit to him.

I can't say I've ever read one of Teflon-Mike's posts to notice the spelling or grammatical errors...it's too much like hard work...sifting through all those words and paragraphs.

I have a stigma in my left eye and find reading a back lit screen quite tricky...so I generally glance over the bones of a post - possibly missing lots of content.
