Title is very vague but is a bit of a strange one.

My computer is a couple of years old and every now again i get this strange problem. I could be using my computer fine for weeks then all of a sudden for no reason the computer has a some sort of heart attack.

Symptoms

Any process hangs then starts then hangs then starts
If i move the mouse it goes then stops then goes then stops
If am listening to music it cuts out then starts then cuts out.
If am playing a game the same thing happens it starts stops starts stops

There is no error message i just need to reboot, as soon as i reboot everything is fine.

My first thought is something overheating possibly the graphics card but would it recover so quick from a reboot and would it cause the computer to hang?

I cant even get into task manager to see if the CPU is getting maxed out.

Sounds like you need to reinstall windows.

What version are you using?

If it anything but 7, do a fresh install.

If it is 7 or you cba to reinstall windows, there are various programs to cleanup your HD, check temperatures of different bits of hardware and check memory for errors.

Possibly you've introduced a program that is running without you knowing and it's taking up a significant amount of resources.

Try running it disconnected from the internet and see what happens.

Then I suggest you strip everything out, dust/clean the lot (don't use a hoover, be sure to touch a radiator before handling chips so you don't fry them with static in your body) and re-assemble. If you know what you're doing you could also take the CPU out and redo its thermal paste (use Arctic Silver).

If it still does it I'd go through the RAM stick by stick.

Finally reinstall the OS as a last resort.

Ill put my money in it being a service running that kicks in to do its thing.

disable the following services

superfetch
readyboost
windows search
win http web proxy auto discovery
and media centre extender

Also, have a look at what you have in the bottom right of the taskbar.
Any AV that is checking for updates every couple of hours?

Download this
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653

And have a look at what processes you are running.

Get this, scan and post the results on here.

https://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/

Should stop you from having to reinstall if we can see what you have running if we can identify the culprit Very Happy

It's going to be hard to diagnose because of how infrequently it happens but the easiest way to rule out software is to boot from a Linux LiveCD (disconnect your harddrive first if you want to be really sure). If it still happens it must be hardware related (m'board, RAM, graphics etc...).

Ugh.

Right, simpleish solution for the time being is this.

Start > Run > Type "msconfig" without quotes. Can't remember is vista has a run bar or just type it in the search box in the start menu.

Click the Start-up tab, untick the acrobat stuff and whatever else needs un-ticking. Leave anything Microsoft related or anything you genuinely want to start up when you turn your pc on.

I only have 2 things ticked out of the whole list, my gfx card console thing and an aesthetics program.

Yeah ive have removed a lot from start up, that i don't need, i do need to have several things loading.

Just to let you know about 10 years ago i did a 3 years at college and a year at uni doing computer networking, i would not class myself as a novice just a bit out of touch.

I had a similar issue a while back with an older PC, however it rebooted when the problem happened and it was the graphics card overheating, just wondering if anyone had a similar problem.

Thanks for your ideas guys, i will give it a good clean this weekend, and make sure the heatsink is ok.

Also, have you installed the 'Rapport' security software as recommended by many banks (HSBC for one) online banking services?
If so remove it, it's known for slowing PC's down and causing problems.

Just a thought!

I don't know if it shows in a hijack this log, as I've never used it. However Rapport is supposedly a legitimate security program, it's just useless at it's job and causes problems, so may not show.
However I am willing to be corrected, after all I'm mostly a Linux user these days so I tend to forget Very Happy
Just offering a little advice just in case he'd installed it recently and it was causing issues, as recently happened to my Mother's PC..the only reason I know about it as nothing else was wrong with her PC and the issues started when she installed it, so I looked it up..and found others witht he same problems.

Of course it might be totally unrelated to his issues but never hurts to cover all bases no?
