Hi all,

So a couple of months ago I got my Kona stinky stolen Sad I Had only just finished building it and had been riding it for a couple of months both on and off road. Here is the only picture I have of her *weep*

https://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/38469_10150229297020497_784455496_13881247_8065221_n.jpg

It was tied up to the motorbikes and the *******s cut through the chain Shocked

Anyway, a space in the garage meant I could build another mountain bike so I set about looking for the perfect frame. I had a budget of around £500 for the frame and after a while I came across this... I didn't want to go full sus again because I found I was mostly riding trails with a few downhill sections inbetween. The kona was a bit overkill tbh

https://www.sowerbybroscycles.co.uk/showbimage.aspx?img=mmmbopquicklime.jpg&w=300

After hours of reading reviews I purchased the above frame + auxiliaries such as the necessary oversized head bearings (£100), stem and a few things like carbon fibre seat posts etc. I also picked up a lovely set of Marzocchi bomber forks which cost alot more than a second hand set of r1 forks Surprised

The frame arrived the next morning, It was beautiful... Amazingly light also

https://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs348.ash2/62847_10150277528140497_784455496_15179338_2613433_n.jpg

https://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/62017_10150277535540497_784455496_15179411_2747705_n.jpg

https://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/61673_10150277536005497_784455496_15179421_6731727_n.jpg

Also, the forks arrived looking like this

https://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/63381_10150277537090497_784455496_15179442_7810670_n.jpg

So the build started...

https://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs682.snc4/62229_10150277537710497_784455496_15179451_3184056_n.jpg

https://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs026.snc4/33675_10150277538095497_784455496_15179456_2160897_n.jpg

Picked up a lovely DT swiss wheel with a massive spindle. Stops anything bending when I crash I suppose. Crashing is something I tend to do alot on the mountain bikes. I wrote off a brand new £400 bike the day a bought it last year. Hence having to build something to last...

https://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/44942_10150278933970497_784455496_15203831_5966204_n.jpg

The fairies came and it started to look like a bike. Massive 2.5 inch tyres. Easton fatboy bars. 9 speed sram rear mech, and a Hayes radial front hydraulic caliper.

https://www.tredz.co.uk/.Hayes-Stroker-Gram-Brake_37774.htm

https://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/46979_10150282671805497_784455496_15288900_4219405_n.jpg

More fairies came and the bike had a rear clark's brake, a downhill single speed raceface crank and some gusset flat pedal + little things like grips.

https://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/44234_10150282674140497_784455496_15288961_1978169_n.jpg

https://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs743.snc4/64330_10150282675250497_784455496_15288987_3987170_n.jpg

https://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/44954_10150282675960497_784455496_15289008_1247813_n.jpg

Not bad for a cheap brake
https://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/65300_10150282676640497_784455496_15289028_4134653_n.jpg

A very expensive trip to my local bike shop saw it fitted with a 9 speed chain and derailleur and she was finished. At long last Smile

https://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/67212_10150284672010497_784455496_15326398_4471112_n.jpg

https://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/68961_10150289887500497_784455496_15434021_5596994_n.jpg

I been out on it a few times now and its great, climbs really easily but still can handle anything that I'm brave enough to throw at it. The oversized head really makes a difference to how the front end feels on the downhill sections. This one stays in the house. There is no way I am going to risk it getting stolen by putting it outside...

Whats the brake you have? I was looking into replacing my levers with metal ones as they feel a lot more secure than the plastic ones I currently have (tried the ones on my mates bike, but don't want to get the same ones)..

[EDIT]

Nevermind, found them on ebay, front disk, lever setup and caliper priced up at £49.99 BIN.. Will be ordering on monday once I get paid... Cool

Do those forks have a 1.5" steerer? I just thought it might have been a bit silly to get a 1.5" compatible frame then get a 1.1/8th steerer fork.

20mm bolt through hubs are definitely the way forward, especially coupled with a maxle type setup like you have!

Thanks for the comments guys. Benson_JV, this mountain bike cost more than my R1 Shocked Good bike though...

And KLR600, Yup I fitted a reducer headset. It meant I could have alot more choice with forks. 1.5 steerer forks tend to be quite heavy too as they are aimed towards freeride type bikes.

I would stay away from the specialized hardrock. I've ridden a few and to be honest the build quality is a bit pants. For between £500-£700 you could pick yourself up a quality second hand bike of ebay/gumtree. Just do your research before you make a bid. Cube do some good bikes in your price range, may be worth giving them a look.

Thanks again,
Damon

Cheers for the sites guys, will check them out...pretty amazing how much some of the stuff is going for Shocked

Funnily enough I was looking at the specialized hardrock stuff, gonna pop to a few of the local shops this weekend and have a look at a few for size.

Thanks Karma

I think they use those suntour forks. They are at the bottom of the "good" fork spectrum. A step up from RST but still shite. It depends what you are going to use the bike for but if you are only hitting some small trails they will be fine. Anything heavier and I would look at getting a more capable set Thumbs Up

I've got Cannock Chase about 30 miles away so was hoping to have a few trips up there for a good ride around. Other than that it's just small-ish trails and getting to college. Heading to North Wales for 3 years in September, so I'll look at upgrading then...

Thanks for the help Thumbs Up

There's soooooooooooooooooooo many good trails in North Wales, I'd budget a little more and get a decent bike that will take the beating those Welsh trails will give.

Are you going to Aberystwyth or Bangor? If it's Bangor I'd definitely save up a little more.

There's a (I think) GT avalanche I, last years model but a cancelled order at a local shop. It's going for £650, reduced from £800ish RRP so I'm going to pop over later after college and perhaps stick a deposit on it.

My firm choice is Bangor Thumbs Up I visited recently and it seemed a really nice area lotsa outdoor stuff to do - and I'm fed up of being around a city now. Gutted I won't be taking a motorbike with me though, but hope the mountain bike makes up for it a little Mr. Green

that look sweet. whats that design on the frame about where the rear end meets the crank area? either side is different.

i had a bike from decathlon which got nicked and the insurance (eventually) replaced it with a Kona Caldera 2010. its amazing how different it feels. the front end is so light and it nips round bends before you even realized its there.

i got some big michlin tyres that need to try out some off road though.....
