When doing even small jobs on bikes , I always end up surrounded in , tools / rags / various spray cans etc etc & jumping from one job to another.
Sometimes, spending more time looking for stuff than , actually doing the job . Are you clinical , in your in your procedures, or a slob like me ? Neutral

I am like you =) But there's always method in my madness... Although you will hear me say things like "Where the fuck's the 15 gone? I had it 2 seconds ago!" Shortly followed by my present company saying "Are you sat on it?" the inevitable is that I am always sat on the tool I need =P

Clinical to say the least. It does my nut in when people leave tools around the place. My tool chest is organised and everything is in order. When I'm done with a tool it goes back in it's place, like wise with sprays or anything else for that matter. Really is a pet hate of mine!

I try very hard to put tools back where I got them from and wipe them clean after use.... however by the time I`ve finished doing a job on my bike, the only floor space left in the garage is under my feet Shocked.
I can bet that EVERY tool I need to use will be right at the bottom of my tool box, and I`ve left the rag in the house Evil or Very Mad

Hi

Pretty messy. Certainly when working on something as otherwise I would spend most of my time getting tools in and out.

All the best

Keith

I'm a big mess - big tidy person. The busier I am the more mess I make because I drag tools out and put them down instead of away. I'm single-minded when I'm concentrating on a job so when the pressure is on I don't even close drawers etc, but I'll tidy up afterwards or when I've lost something.

If I'm not flat-out busy I'll do a 'ten-minute tidy' once in a while.

Messy whilst working, tidy afterwards.

Tools out as I need them, once the job is done I'll stick them back in a tidy organised fashion so that I can lose them again next time something needs to be done.

Messy as anything

I'll spend hours looking for a spanner I had two minutes ago only to give up and get another one out and then find the first one in the stupiest of places.

I'll put all the bolts in a safe place and then lose the safe place.

I can never find a 13m or a 10m spanner even though I know I own at least 6 of each.

and I could stuff a duvet with the amount of rags I use!

Hi

By the way, are surgeons that tidy? Or do they just throw the stuff to someone else to sort out.

All the best

Keith

And each of his tools has a name, he says hello to them and fondles them when they aren't being used, he has a burial and a church sevice whenever one needs replacing

surgeon without a doubt. I have 4 plastic boxs which I place around the bike. That way I know where each bolt comes from. Also keep my tools very clean and make sure I know where ever bit is.

I never loose my cool and always work around problems!

I took all my tools out of their box in order to tidy up....a year later and the toolbox is empty

but I do have a nice big plastic box full of said tools...and some on the floor, and some under the shelving unit, and some MIA!

makes perfect sense, and if done right you can spin the bike round instead of walking round the other side of it.

I always tried that "keep everything in its place" but i seem to spend more time backwards and forwards to the shed cos the tool box is to big and heavy for my 11.5 stone frame to move and not on wheels!

Tend to just leave them around various parts of the bike/car/floor then loose what i need and spend to much time looking for it.

The odd thing is that it always tends to be an 11mm spanner that i loose!

I always start off with good intentions, but inevitably it goes downhill.

If I'm doing a smallish job I'll get the tools out that I know I'm going to need.

This never works, no matter how small the job I'll end up with at least half the tools I own strewn across the floor. Rolling Eyes
Surely there's got to be a, named, law for this, (like Sod's Law, etc.)ie. Sids' Law say that no matter how small the job, the number of tools required doubles for every three Philips head screws that need removing.

At this precise moment my dining table is the resting place for two socket sets, 4 screwdrivers, one set of moley's, one oil cooler, various boxes of screws and nuts, a tin of extra strong adhesive, a box of random fittings I've stripped of various bikes, a magnifying glass and a torch. It's about to receive a chicken tikka massala , but that wont be there long! Mr. Green

In theatre they have people to get their stuff out, and people to clear it away. I train and supervise them during their PhD or MD, and there's no evidence of them being any tidier in my lab than a normal person or student.

I start off being organized but gradually descend into chaos.

Haha you really have no idea how much it irritates me. My other half reckons I have OCD. I have done the same with my Car & Bike cleaning fluids, waxes rags etc. I have at one point even gone to the length of making sure the rags were in size order.

I'm more like the hospital administrator: I organise for my mechanic to come and pick my bike up for all the work.

Bit of both, I do tend to loose things when i'm doing a job and it does look messy when I am actually undertaking a job. But I tidy up when i'm finished.

But all my spanners are hung up on individual pegs, I have 2 sets, ranging from 6mm - 32mm.

My socket set is a few years old and missing nothing.

What I do, is to have a plastic tray so I put bits in, I also have to small magnetic plates to catch all the screws.

I also have things like part bins to keep things together.

im a bit messy,
i get all the tools out that i think i'll need for a job,
but if i find i need something else, i'll quite often take the tool in my hand to where ever the new tool is and some how leave that tool some where on the way there, then spend 10 mins trying to find the bloody thing again,

when i finish a job i'll quite often leave shit strewn all over the place while i go for a test ride,
and some times it won't be untill the next day i go and clean up,

I'm a bit bi-polar on this one. Tools end up all over the place, but any parts that come off the bike are neatly stored, in the order and relative placement they came off, in containers or punched through cardboard. Despite many good intentions, I have yet to take pictures as I go (I do have a relatively photographic memory which makes reassembly fairly easy to remember, but is difficult to upload to Flickr).
