I thought I'd join the club.

It's 1992 registered, done 4000 miles according to the clocks and is in decent condition.

What do you all think of it?

I ended up paying 470 quid for it.

Looks tidy for the money... Thumbs Up

A mate bought the 200 version a few years back for £200, bit of chrome polish and a plug change and it was like new, I've been trying to get it off him since as a pissabout/hack but he refuses to sell it, the little Ginger bastard...

They're uber cool and I want one soo bad. There was a blue one for sale round the corner, about 10000 miles on the clock and it looked brand new. He wanted 600 for it and I wish I had gone for it now. Yours looks like it's in good nick.

A real bargain, considering you've effectively got an almost new bike there. Even mercilessly thrashed RXS100s usually are good for at least 50,000 miles, so you should get a decent bit of service from her. I'd forgotten what a mint condition RXS seat and tank looked like Laughing And look at that pipe Shocked A thing of considerable beauty Mr. Green

Xmas day 1990 - I'd had mine just over a week. Tank was partially paint strippered when I bought it for £100 (4 years old) and I decided to spray her white:

July 1994 - mileage passed the 100,000 mile mark (for the first time):

Jan 2010, shortly after passing the 350,000 mile mark:

During her black spell last summer, when the blue tank was off having a hole sealed:

Posing at dusk in the autumn:

In the December sunshine, having just passed MOT number 21, mileage 371,700 - my RXS, a strange object of desire, I have to admit Laughing :

Mine illustrates how they can soldier on and on with a bit of effort. The OP's is immaculate - that's always a good start Mr. Green Considering a new CG125 is about 2 grand and the RXS is vastly superior in every way except fuel economy (OK, and maybe electrics Wink ), that puts £470 into context.

Also Cows, lights, is there any way to improve them? Do the indicators ever work at the same time as the brake light? Or is it not worth bothering with. I wondered weather there was a way of rigging up LED bulbs.

There are 3 issues with the bike. The forks are pitted, but they're covered with gaitors so I'm not too bothered about them. They pass an MOT anyway.

The tank is rusted quite a bit on the inside but I'm not too bothered about that either.

There is a leak on the left side of the bike. I think it's probably gearbox oil. I can sort that out with a gasket though.

Other than these things it's pretty much perfect. I'm loving this wee bike. It's great fun. This is what I've been needing.

That looks a decent buy Thumbs Up

Red ones ftw

https://i979.photobucket.com/albums/ae271/RxsOllie/rxs.jpg

Its a known fact that the red ones are faster.

Mine's a complete pita but I still love it.

Those rear shocks look a bit weird, any idea what they're from?

Snap!

The rear shocks had been replaced by the previous owner, along with mudguards and other stuff. While it's not done many miles, it has still clearly rusted away while sitting up.

I don't know where the previous owner got the shocks or anything else. All I have is the V5 and one MOT.

Current motor has 116,000 on it, all original components including piston, rings and small end. That's exceptional - 75K is normally the most you can get before a rebore. 30-50,000 before the first rebore is more common. Then probably every 20K thereafter, with a big end needed around 60-80K.

That's if looked after and ridden with longevity in mind. Caned really hard, probably need a rebore every 20,000 or so.

Re lights, you can get halogen 45W bulbs which significantly improve matters, but they're expensive and quite hard to find.

Visible rust that you can see through the filler cap is very common where a bike has sat for a long time with the fuel below that level (as this must have with that low mileage). Drain a bit of fuel out into a clear cup one day when you're low on petrol and see how clean it is. Chances are the rust is superficial and won't be a problem.

Forks are pretty easy to come by. The ideal situation is to use GS125 stanchions in the original legs, with 20W oil and longer springs (I use ones from an RD125 twin - they seem to work nicely). The GS stanchions have better quality chrome and hex head caps, so you don't have that grief with getting the originals out.

Left side leak is usually kickstart seal. Mine has been leaking for about 70,000 miles and has never got worse Laughing

Considering the kickstart is on the right, I doubt it Wink

I think you mean the gear lever.

tbh, looking at it, I think it's the gasket that is between the left hand engine case and the main crank case. I don't know if that makes any sense.

The leakage looks a bit like a rusty colour.

Embarassed

Maybe when I've own the old wreck 30 years I'll remember which side the kickstart is on Neutral

Could be gearchange or output shaft but it's most commonly the clutch pushrod that leaks from the left. Or it could simply be chain lube. If I had a quid for every time I've had a drip drip and it's turned out to be lube or lube mixed with rain, I'd be wealthy. I've never yet had a serious leak.

Re indicators, they will flash at the time as the brake light is on - but you have to keep the battery in good nick (monthly top ups and frequent recharging). Using Yuasa batteries instead of Taiwan ones also helps a lot, as does making sure the relay is the same wattage as all four bulbs (some RXS100s use 10W, others 23W - which is why they tend to be mix and matched often, with the result of them not working properly, flashing too fast etc).

That'll probably be rainwater mixed with lube and/or gearbox oil from a possible leak - the rust will likely be from the sprocket. There's no gasket on the left hand case (flywheel and front sprocket cover). Might be a good idea to whip that off and give everything a clean up and look over.

Re MPG, varies considerably depending on the condition of the motor, and how it's ridden. Motor in good nick, 90mpg pretty easy to achieve. Really worn one like mine, 65mpg. About the same from a good one really thrashed hard, constantly.

Alright guys, I am looking for suggestions of things to do to the bike.

Things already on the list are:

Change Gearbox Oil
Replace Whatever Gasket is Leaking
Lube Cables
Clean and ACF50 Everything
Replace spark plug
Clean Air Filter
Clean carb.

Is there anything else that you suggest that I do to the bike that is worthwhile?

Also, what 2 stroke oil do you recommend for an RXS. I'd be looking for economy without sacrificing performance much.

Thanks for the help guys!

I use Wilko two stroke myself. About as cheap as it gets and the RXS runs lovely on it Smile

In that case, how much faster does it shift, than a CG? Noticeably more poke?

From Wilkinsons - its their own brand oil Laughing It's the green one (the red one is semi-synthetic and double the price). But really any 2T oil will do. I used only Silkolene Super 2 for years till I realised that even the cheapest oil will keep the RXS running exactly the same.

Yep, much quicker, particularly on acceleration. Standard RXS does a genuine 72mph (at least - my original motor used to indicate well over 80). An RXS in reasonable nick will leave a CG for dead. In the days of 12hp learner limits, it was the fastest restricted bike bar none, hence its popularity with learners.
